glad to know that a lot of people agree that FF is not an actual RPG. Although FFVII remains my all-time favorite game, slapping the term 'role-playing' on most jrpg's sounds blasphemous, after playing the likes of NWN and Vampire Bloodlines. I call the real genre for jrpg is stats-based story-driven super-long adventure game with extra hair
god I hated Doom 3, you can't see anything unless you have your flashlight out, and then you can't shoot, so you can't shoot the imp that appears behind you for the 50th time because it takes so long to switch to a gun, you just have to memorize where all the enemies spawn, so dumb
What about...
Ninja Gaiden 2
Perceived Genre: Action platformer
Real Genre (according to XBLMarketplace): HIGH SPEED NINJA ACTION!!!
I never knew such a genre existed, heh.
RebornKusabi: Post of the week so far. :) Your prize? This imaginary trophy, unfortunately.
WaffleLeech: Interesting point. I personally wouldn't go as far as RTS, but the strategy elements of Bioshock's combat definitely shouldn't be downplayed. With the right equipment and planning you can clear a room almost without firing a shot. It's massively satisfying.
DabilahroNinja: I never knew either, but I'm glad it does. Something like that really should be an official term.
"When played with the right mind-set, the lack of plot is more than made up for with...and the knowledge that you're outmanned and outgunned by some of the foulest monsters ever to drool the blood of the innocent."
Felt this way on the second to last levl of CoD: WaW on Veteran. lol.
This one really bugs me because how could it ever be a shooter did any one actually ever fire a gun more than 3 times yet it says FPS everywhere. I mean come on LBP has more shooting than this and the paintball gun is easier to use.
I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with the bit about Far Cry 2 being an "Open World Stealth" game. It isn't. It's not that the AI is too good, it's broken.
If I crouch in tall grass, under a big tree, in the shade, fifty yards away from the road, and I still manage to get shot at...that's not good AI. Snipers will spot you in impossible to see locations. Patrols will
turn around and make a bee line directly toward you after shooting a silenced pistol at the gunner while behind cover.
Great article, but it made me thinks some interesting things.
I feel like it demonstrates the lack of proper dialogue that we as players use to discuss videogames, in that we focus too much on what a game is "supposed to be." No other media seems to be so rigid in attempting to fit it's products into genres and discuss them from that angle. It's interesting to see how a player's opinion changes just based on camera angle. For example, if one were to see a gun sticking out of the bottom of the screen, the reaction seems to be, "Okay, this is a first person shooter," not "I'm holding a gun." When reading a book or watching a movie the reaction of the user is typically not "you got drama in my comedy," it's to react to the things that are actually occuring. I think part of the issue is that most genres for other mediums are not based so much on basic technique. No one says that low angle shots are for romantic comedies only, or that the placement of the subject to the verb defines that book as science fiction. Perhaps that just an inevitable part of the way that we interact with the medium of videogames, and not the specific videogames themselves. I don't know.
I feel like the breakdown of P.N. 03 said it best, and, again, it's a great article. I'm glad that it points out that a game can be brought down by what some expect from that "genre."
i agree with your assestment of far cry 2, however a resonable majorty of the game is more of "use the envorment to save the day in a way that leaves you exposed". the molotovs are a surefire way to have every hostile trying to kill you, but also give you a huge advantage, enemys will run into your line of sight to excape fire (kudos to the fire engeine) and more importently, stop shooting.in that sense in can also let you revert to stelth, while enemys are busy focusing on the fire you can hide and wait to things to get calm again...and before another person says "the AI is way too agressive for stelth" its not, its ment to be challanging(imangen your a soldier in africa, yea id be pretty attentive too) and most of the time its you own blunder for gettnig cought, you diddent take the time to look for ALL the snipers or you dident analyise the patrol routes, you can almost alweas trace it back to yourself... bravo GR, i thought i was the only one who spooted that
Nope, we'll soon be around the times where people will not classify one genre for a game and that's a good thing. Although the people that don't like other genres might not agree but you get exposed to new things and you may like it, growing your gaming love. Look at Battlestations Midway, GTAIV, Fallout 3, Banjo Kazoie and others.
