The Top 7… worst games in great games

Because playing bad games in good games breaks our brain

Words: Tyler Nagata, GamesRadar US

The game: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
The in-game games: They Crawled from Uranus, Go Go Space Monkey, Let’s Get Ready to Bumble, and Duality

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is the first game to truly take the idea of the purposefully bad in-game game to the extreme and run it into the ground. Like most of these kinds of in-game games, the point isn’t whether or not the game is fun. It’s more that they were there, adding to the ambiance of a videogame world that’s so realistic, it even has its own video games. But we still think they should be more fun.

Painful satires of old school games are strategically placed in bars, clubs, convenience stores and game consoles throughout the world so that you, the player, can ignore them. Do you remember any of these games in the game? Don’t worry, we remembered for you and in case you forgot, yes, they all sucked.

Above: Psst. Uranus sounds a lot like “your anus.” Get it?!?!

Above: A generic side-scrolling shooter about a monkey in space who’s trying to go further to the right

Above: Ready to Bumble keeps you “bees-y” as you try to “buzz” your way up the screen

Above: Duality helps make sure that younger gamers are aware of Asteroids

The game: Final Fantasy X
The in-game game: Blitzball

We hate Wakka. We hate his shit-eating grin, his stupid attacks, and his faux Polynesian attire. We even hate his sticky gelled hair. But once we stopped to examine our deep disgust with the Jar Jar Binks of the Final Fantasy series, we realized that it’s not just Wakka we hate. We also hate his favorite fictional sport, Blitzball. That’s the true source of our disdain for Wakka, the game-in-a-game that brought shame to one of our favorite JRPGs series.

So why do we hate Blitzball? Let’s put it this way. Blitzball is so bad that it makes us ponder some of life’s most fundamental questions.

Above: How did we get here? We thought we were playing a JRPG with swords ‘n' shit

Above: Where are we going? Seriously, the camera control gives us vertigo

Above: If God doesn’t exist, is everything permitted? Really, how can we tell right from wrong if we can’t even figure out which way we’re facing?

Above: What is our purpose? We hope it’s not to overcome adversity and form long lasting friendships with these douche bags

Above: Ugh

I thought the blitzball games were brilliant! You could choose team members, moves, and actually alot of fun
Then X-2 went and ruined it by turning it into a Football Manager style game, blegh, other than that I completely agree with this list

Fucking hated Blitzball, hated all the arcade games in GTA too. Just plain hate minigames, cuz they never really give you anything worth your time. RE4's shooting gallery, you win some figurines that say the same line over and over again, WHOOPIE!!!!!!

I was expecting to see Cub3d from GTA IV, I hated that goddamn game and that I had to set a high score to reach 100%.

Gah blitzball. -groan-

Oh and that's C3PO not R2D2 good sir.

i thought cub3d was actually a pretty decent little puzzle game, not that it wasn't annoying having to get the high score.

felt for sure that card game from FF8 would be on the list. (can't remember what it's called)

I thought of all the terrible carnival games in Bully.

Oh God, I hated blitzball for three reasons; reason 1: everything GR mentioned already. reason 2: the horribily ugly clothes that Tidus wears throughout the entire game is his Blitzball outfit. reason 3: We first meet Seymour, the least intimidating and worst Final Fantasy villian ever, at the Blitzball tournament

@iluvmyDS: C3PO isn't playing against Chewbacca, he is just watching and giving advice to R2D2, who is playing but isn't in the snapshot above. Remember when 3PO told R2 to "let the wookie win"?

Great List
I acctually quite enjoyed Pazaak in KOTOR a lot. Sometimes I would just play it for hours becouse i was only gonna try "one more time."

Lol, star wars debate in the gamesradar comments.
Z-man427  - 9 months 15 days ago
I'm not one to pick, but that screen cap from KotOR, did not look like anything from the original KotOR.

and the Ewoks lived on Endor, not Kashyyyk. that was the Wookiee homeworld. and you call yourselves nerds
LordRevan111  - 9 months 15 days ago
Speaking of which, useless Star Wars trivia, Boba Fett didnt actually die, he crawled out, just wanted to throw that out there. . .
MrSegraves  - 9 months 15 days ago
Actually, the Ewoks won on the forest moon of Endor, not Kashyyyk. That'd be the Wookie planet, boys.

They should of had more Pazaak in KotOR, course I also liked the b-ball thing in Dead Space so there.

To continue the Star Wars debate, it was definitely C-3P0. After Han says that people aren't worried about upsetting droids because, "droids don't pull people's arms outta their sockets when they lose," Threepio says to R2, "I propose a new strategy: Let the Wookie win."

This was a good list. I always thought that the extra minigames in games often suck. I hated the games in Bully, especially that damned Consumo that you had to get the high score in to get on the nerds' good sides.

i loved blitzball,it's the only thing i had to occupy my time when i was bored leving for a boss fight
Jacob816  - 9 months 15 days ago
Dude, the cut out shooting range mini gamae in Dead Space was way more annoying.

@LordRevan111 actually, I believe it was Dengar that rescued Boba Fett from the Sarlacc Pit.
Oh and Blitzball was terrible
