Step 5 - Affixing the rose-colored glasses to your face

Any time a new console makes it out, at least one or two others slink away into the dreaded Swamp of Gooey Nostalgia. Once there, they become impervious to harm. If you were to go by the internet's expert, informed opinion, you'd have to believe the Dreamcast was and still is the best system ever invented. To question this would mean wave after wave of misty-eyed gamers recalling their fondest memories of the world's favorite half-step console. Waxing nostalgic about classic machines is unavoidable, but the truth is, well, they died for a reason.

Above: Great system. But not the best. Get over it

This becomes truer the further back you go. Classic or not, it turns out, the Vectrex pretty much sucks. And there's a whole host of NES, SNES and PSone games that were once proud additions to their systems and now are terrible wastes of time. Some systems deserve the unwavering praise, but for the most part, we all just need to let sleeping dogs lie.

Or, just repeat after us: "Everything new sucks until the next thing comes out. When that happens, the new thing invariably proves even more insultingly horrid, thereby making the previously sucky, no-longer-new thing way better by comparison and therefore classic and preferable to this new shit we're now stuck playing."
