The Top 7… shameless rip-offs

The games that stole from the best attempting to beat the rest

Words: Dave Meikleham, GamesRadar UK

If imitation is the greatest form of flattery, then the following games are the biggest kiss asses of all time. Whether photocopying the entire structure of a monumental platform game or cloning every character and move from a beloved beat 'em up, these titles have no qualms about knocking-off other developers’ work

7. Banjo Kazooie

Ripped off: Super Mario 64

The photocopied premise: A fat character jumps through portals into a series of colourful 3D platform worlds, collecting valuables in an effort to rescue a loved one.

What it borrowed: Rare are fine developers in their own right (well, in their halcyon-coated N64 heyday). But that didn’t stop them rolling into the Mushroom Kingdom, holding up all the idea banks and stealing as many of the Italian toilet jockey’s mechanics and moves as they could stuff into dollar-branded bags.

Levels that were accessed through a central hub, the obsessive hoovering up of collectibles to further your progression, even Mario’s athletic collection of jumps, all ripped straight from Miyamoto’s magnum opus. To be fair, two years had passed since Mario 64’s release and Banjo was the first real AAA platformer released after the N64’s launch. So the borrowed ideas seemed fresher than they might, had the game been released closer to Mario’s Mushroom Kingdom escapades.

How to make a Mario 64 knock-off

Is it really just a rip-off?

No. Thanks to Rare’s superior dry British wit and ninja-esque N64 programming powers, Banjo was both an imminently likeable and beautiful looking platformer. While it may have stolen many of Mario 64’s structural ideas, it succeeded by being more ambitious and varied, if not anywhere near as groundbreaking.

6. Syphon Filter

Ripped off: Metal Gear Solid

The photocopied premise: A crack government agent is aided by a sexy Asian operative as he tries to avert a nuclear holocaust.

What it borrowed: Most of the Gear’s storytelling techniques. Filter’s multilayered, convoluted plot about government conspiracies, nuclear weapons and backstabbing were taken straight from Snake’s sweaty palms.

Both games also feature protagonists who unwittingly infect innocent civilians with viruses. And Gabe Logan’s cinematic cut-scenes were obviously influenced heavily by Kojima’s earlier overly talkative, yet superbly directed story scenes.

How to make a Metal Gear Solid knock-off

Is it really just a rip-off?

Oh yes. And an overrated one at that. For some reason, folks seemed to think the game’s ridiculously dark and fairly boring levels constituted grit. The stealth also paled in comparison to the Gear, thanks to A.I. so inbred it makes Deliverance’s hillbillies look like Harvard graduates. At least Gabe Logan was every bit the charismatic equal to Solid Snake… minus the cool one-liners… or charm… or personality.

well, they say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery...

i played about half the games on this list and i thought they were all pretty good, except for the metal gear knock-off... couldn't suffer past the first level, but that level was fun!

i'm surprised there aren't any RPGs added to this list, elves, gnomes, dwarves, magic, quests... they're all the same game but with different names! but boy do i love 'em!

I remember buying robopon in hopes of recreating the pokemon experience but it failed and i hated myself afterwards

@harujongil - RPGs do have similar themes, but in the same way that things like Gears of War, Halo etc will have "hardened space marines with big guns".

I loved Dead Space, but it did seem a bit RE4-like at the time... But the over-the-shoulder POV works really well, so why not... And it was distinctive on its own too.

I agree with the Robopon thing. From the screenshot, boxart and the statistics (like HP, level, you get me.). And I also played it and it sucked. Freaking game made me want Pokemon more.

And even if Dead Space "imitated" Resident Evil, I still love it!

ilove super mario 64 and although there is a blatent ripoff, i think banjo kazooie is so much better.

games always have and always will compete with each other, but most of these are just pure laziness

Good article but I think you were somewhat unfair with Syphon filter. About from it being an excellent game that still stands up today, the very fact that Metal Gear Solid is a primarily stealth based game, and Syphon Filter is a third person shooter with maybe one or two stealth levels kind of renders your comparison obsolete.
Jordo141  - 3 months 23 hours ago
YES. I agree with musashi1596 about Syphon Filter. If you played any of the 6(?) games in the series you would know that it's a 3rd person shooter, and it's not like a single game series can copyright a particular theme for it's story.... Sorry Dave you really got this one wrong.....

Syphon Filter and just about every game to include stealth has copied MGS. MGS was the start of the stealth genre. Look at Splinter Cell as well. Both Syphon and Cell are ripped straight off MGS just with different abilities. Im not saying the others havent contributed to gaming but MGS has set a marker for stealth games and storytelling.

Never heard of robopon. Damn the box art!

And so the SF bashing is STILL in fashion at ole GR is it? Sure the series vorrowed a shedload from, MG and the AI was, in the first game esp, retarded-however why does the , much poorer for it time all round Sc get off scott free?

Arguably it borrows far more than SF did as SF is way more action heavy-and even now is about the most requested old Sony franchise by fans. I expect a Sony London/Bend game next year using 8Days and Getaway tech to shut you guys up once and for all.

SC:C looks to be good as well, as it should after last times AWFUL game and a million false starts!

Plus why no special 2this gen" section far all MS has ripped off? Avatars-Miis, Lips-Singstar, You're in..oh you get it the point without even touching on Natal ripping off BOTH Sony and Ninty!

Krazy racers deserves additional credit for ripping off the mario franchise in the "having a ridiculously memorable soundtrack" department. Blang blang blang blang blang blang racing!

Wow. I am glad that the only one of these I have ever played was a demo for the new sequel to Banjo Kazooie, which focuses more on carts and customization and exploration via carts, rather than running and jumping through the level in search of friend-saving items. I personally think that some of these games would have been destroyed in reviews if they were compared to even the ET game, but that is just my opinion.

Also, @harujongil, mimicry is only flattering IF it is good mimicry, not like when Cluemaster started mimicking the Riddler in the comic (NOT the Kids WB/Cartoon Network/Boomerang TV series), and leaving easier riddles behind than Riddler did (which always made him get caught until he realized he was getting nowhere and stopped leaving clues)

Dave Meikleham Is by far, the funniest UK editor of the month (August not September)

Wasn't Fighter's History the one with weapons, or did Data East make a different Samurai Shodown ripoff, too?
Unoriginal  - 3 months 19 hours ago
Great List. Is it just me or does the UK get to do less top 7s?

Entertaining and great list. Could have put in GTA3 and every sandbox game since but I guess that would have been to easy.
