The Top 7... New Year's Resolutions for the world of games

Devs, publishers and gamers take note. Here's how to have a great 2009

Words: David Houghton, GamesRadar UK

Master Chief’s favourite viewpoint has become ever more dominant in games over the last couple of generations, to the point where it sometimes feels like the industry’s default camera view. Don’t get us wrong, we love a good FPS and we totally appreciate the immersion the perspective can afford a game. But to be honest we’re just getting dog-tired of seeing everything down the barrel of a gun, seemingly just for the hell of it. And for all of its advantages, there are some things that first-person can never do as well as third-person. Just compare the combat in Oblivion and Fable II. Which one is the most dynamic and fun?

And while we’re on the subject, let’s pay attention to the fact that 2008 has finally, thankfully seen the glorious resurgence of 2D. Braid. Bionic Commando: Rearmed. SSFIITHDR. Street Fighter IV. Geometry Wars 2. Mega Man 9. Anything with the phrase “PixelJunk” in the title. All brilliant, all as good as anything in 3D, and all impossible in anything but two dimensions. The industry finally seems to be accepting that 2D is a legitimate form again. Let’s keep that up in 2009. Nintendo, you have WiiWare. Start thinking Mario and Zelda.

Seriously guys. We know that you’re just people doing jobs, the same as any of the rest of us. And we know that means that you have opinions and frustrations, and a need to vent from time to time. And we’re interested in that, we really are. But that’s why we interview you. That’s why we record open, one-on-one conversations with you and give you a chance to tell us how things are going over on your end. It’s a system that works and we enjoy it. So what in the hell more, in the name of all that is good and pure, do you think you’re going to achieve by instigating a flame war on a forum?

Some people are always going to disagree with what you say and do. But disagreeing back on a public forum does no good whatsoever, no matter how many compliments you might direct towards their mothers in the process. If they think your game is shit, the only way their opinion will change is from “shit game” to “shit game made by a whiney dickhead”. People criticise forums for being reactionary, immature and needlessly angry, and they are. By getting involved in that crap, you’re achieving nothing but being all of those things yourself. Be professional, get on with your job and let your work do the talking. Then we’ll meet up and you can vent all you like.

If only all of this were to happen, in particular games only getting released when finished and gamers stop arguing about what is best and just start having fun! I'm fed up of hearing game x is so bad, when it's an amazing game with one minor fault which gamers latch onto as if it's a deal breaker!!!! gamers get over yourself and just enjoy games for what they are! GAMES! GLORIFIED TOYS!

What happened to Spore was just a massive face-palm every time I read about it. The fact that the game has been the pirated all to hell and back just has me worried about the PC platform. I really don't think downloading these games for free are a good solution to the DRM problem. It just shows to the game developers "Hey, everyone on PC have the potential to never have to buy any games, so why bother releasing them at all?"

My worst fear is that in the long-term future game companies will just stick to releasing fewer and fewer games onto the PC platform. Where we are now, console games are taking longer to release onto PC... if at all. I really don't want to abandon my PC and get a 360 just to play Gears of War 2, The Darkness or Dead Rising. And yes, these games I mentioned so far have not yet released on PC, and might never be ported at all. My faith in the PC gaming audience is being shaken. And no matter how many sales Blizzard makes can save it.

Didnt you do a gamer new years resolution list last year?

anyway, the fact of the matter with this list is that its 100% true, and although this is the case, no games publisher is going to see this, and continue to use crap like SecuROM and First Person (for Shooters) because they CAN. It's a real let down to see such a mass of truth and game improving ideas go down the pan, but it still made an interesting read.

Keep up the loving of improvement and we might eventually get to gaming Nirvana.

THIS LIST CONTAINS TRUTH!!!!

i must say i disagree on 2 ponts here.

first-person view is great for shooters, whilst little else. 3rd person is kinda crappy on shooters, but can work wonders in other genres. Gears are good games, indeed, but in my oppinion shooters should be F.P.

releasing games before they are done is a way to let gamers have a huge go at the game earlier than what would have been possible otherwise. as long as the DLC that finishes the game is free and does not take too much space it is a good thing.

bickering aside; the rest i must agree on. oh, maybe except 7. exclusives are what makes any console worthwhile, everything are just perks. lol

everything else are just perks, that is...

The Capcom vs. Sega thing is disgustingly true. I don't know how Sega keeps deliberately avoiding the advice everyone gives them.

I think a large part of this is that Sega is very Japanese, while Capcom is all over the map. SF is owned by the USA Capcom, BC was made in Europe, and Mega Man 9 was probably one of those games that went over way better over here (though I'm just talking out my ass).

I somehow doubt that things are run the same way on the other side of the pond. Sometimes that's good, and sometimes that's werehog.

i agree with the first person. my 2 favorite games: GTA and GoW2 are both 3rd person

Cernunnos-yes, that's a good point, but still, not everyone is hooked up to the internet. I myself have to haul my 360 from one side of the house to the other in order to hook it up for anything, and if I have to do that with every stupid game that I buy JUST because the developers decided to ship it early... I start to lose out on the reason I bought the game anyways.
Remember when games shipped complete? Like...a generation ago? Ah...let's all...let's just go back to then and remember how nice it was...

Great article. I think developers should take heed when it comes to listening to what fans want, not producing uninspired dross that ends up in the bargain bin a week after release.

yes, nintendo HAVE to listen to no. 3. by freak of nature the quality of 3rd party games being released lately is better than 1st party.

although maybe its time to accept that ninty has a newer bigger fanbase, casual gamers. but those casual gamers didnt stick with them through the gamecube years (shudder) they have to give us something back.
