In the UK, I've never seen stories like these in the mainstream news media. The only time there are segments about games are when there's a massive release or when E3 is on and, to be fair on them, they don't do too bad a job of them.
Watched the videos in the artice though - some of the points they made were damn moronic. The Mass Effect one has to be the worst. The panel made me laugh. Its plain ignorance.
That author on the left in the Mass Effect video infuriated me. No matter what the Spike.com representative said she always responded with: "Yes, I can see your point but you are wrong and you are an idiot"(slight paraphrasing)
Good job Mikel. Now Im a little angry though but that is the point of week of hate, right? Damn media ignorance.
great article guys, why does the older generation speculate on how games are played in GTA IV you dont have to go and have sex and beat up hoes geez and ask a real gamer to get the facts straight
Jack...Jack...Jack get you fact right before you shout you ill-informed ass off.... the worst school shooting ever was a German guy who played counter strike?? thats odd In Dunbane Scotland Thomas Hamilton Murdered 16 children and 1 adult = 17 in 1996 before games like counter strike were released and this sick man had nothing reported to do with video games he was just screwed up like all these other nutters!!
Surely if there's a connection between school shootings and anything, its social ineptitude, not gaming. Every time it happens, the shooter is described nonchalantly as 'a loner'.
damn.these people are so full of crap.the biggest shame is that people actually believe these scare stories which just ruins everything for good, non-psychotic gamers like us.
The Daily Mail lying about something?! What has the world come to?! I'm surprised they didn't link foreigners to it, after all Niko is. "Coming over here, committing our crime!"
Fantastic article. Its really interesting to see what the media in that part of the world is saying regarding video games. Not that India is much better, we're just a little preoccupied with all the shenanigans in Pakistan.
Also, I kinda wish you used that - "They're gonna swing on the monkey bars like the Al-Qaeda!" from T-Dar. I loved that.
I think this problem will persist until a new generation enters mainstream journalism, say in 5 - 10 years. You can see how college courses have been altered to include more game/graphic design and these are becoming more widely accepted and taught.
As for the whole games are for children argument my favorite moment was the guy who said there was no law in New York to stop a child buying an M-rated game???? How about the salesman?? Idiot.
That mass effect video made me want vomit blood onto my computer monitor.
The irony is everyone one of those people probably have a dvd collection of dozens of rated R movies are 11 gigafucktons more violent/depraved than the pg-13 scene in mass effect or any mature rated game for that matter.
Ahh you gotta love what passes as actual news. There was a time where you had to check your facts, do research and present both sides. Now they can make shit up especially about things they dont understand. What a great day in history. Great article cant wait for the next.
I hope I wasn't the only one who shouted a little cheer when Jack Thompson was disbarred. It should be a day celebrated annually by gamers everywhere. In case you weren't aware, on Sept. 25th, 2008, Thompson was permanently disbarred for consistent misconduct and ordered to pay $43.6k and change to the Florida Supreme Court.
