Arcanum forced a lot of difficult decisions, the one that leaps immediately to mind is the choice between magicka and technology. On one hand, I can light my enemies on fire with a fireball spell... on the other hand, I can light my enemies on fire with a napalm grenade. On one hand, I can shoot a dwarf in the face with a shotgun, in the other I can root him to the ground with vines and hit him with a bolt of acid. I still don't know which was better.
To people commenting about the official Ar tonelico II art, the bath/shower/towel theme isn't just some random sexy image - in the game those characters can take a bath to gain stat boosts. It's really cute. You put little bath salts and stuff in the water and they splash around and level up. Seriously.
The worst for me was the choice between Ashley or Kaiden in Mass effect. It wasnt so much the choice (which was kaiden for me, as i never used Ashley), it was the really depressing music that played for like, an hour after i made the choice that really makes me hate that part. Soooooo depressing....
Also, @ Carolyn, im just going to assume that most of thed commenters here are guys (including myself), so, not to make it seem like a bad thing, but if two girls are taking a bath, i really dont think a guy is going to be paying much attention to the bath salts, sorry, just saying the truth.
I blew up Megaton, I did, couldn't resist, like he said, how often do you get to nuke a whole city. I could have a bunch of people go good for you, thanks for saving us, or I could detonate an atomic bomb, blow the shit out of everything, killing dozens (not sure how many people really were in Megaton), and watch from the balcony of a penthouse a safe distance away and get a sweet safehouse in the building. Maybe I got an assload of bad karma, but hey, I was going to anyway, I killed everyone I could, literally, anyone that I was able to kill, I did. After getting 1000 Bad Karma points and having already detonated an atomic bomb, what was the point of playing by the rules that society dictates are correct.
I never found the Little Sisters particularly gut-wrenching. I harvested them when I felt like I needed a bit more ADAM. Although I did stop doing this after they [SPOILER] save you.
Still got the evil ending. Screw those guys. D:
I didn't know Moira survived Megaton as a ghoul.
I think the GTAIV choices were fascinating and thought provoking, but not gut-wrenching. Dwayne and X were both kind of dicks. As were the McReary brothers. Corrupt cop everyone hates or useless drug-addled asshole?
Aaaand Carolyn is terrifying.
Anyway, it's good to see articles about this sort of thing. Choices and such are what move video games as a story-telling medium forward. It's why Bioware are so understandably well loved. (and why KotOR is the BESTEST GAMEST EVEREST!!11121)
Speaking of I'm shocked you didn't put a certain one from Mass Effect up there. You know the one.
When i played Splinter Cell:Double Agent, I couldnt believe when they asked you to *SPOILERS*kill Lambert, i sat there for so long with the game paused because i have played all the other Splinter Cell games and hes cool character. I decided to kill the terrorist guy in the room instead.
Fable 2, they freaking PUNISH you for being good. Lose experience in the spire, lose your youth in the tomb, lose your dog at the end of the game to save some joes who died. And yet, I still was good.
Sorry to double-post. I am a little stumped as to why Chrono Cross's tough choice(s) didn't make it on, while Ar Tenelico's "whose boobs do you want to imagine fondling" competition scored so high on the list. Fail, guys. Fail.
even though you dont really have a choice,i think reviving elika in prince of persia next gen really gets you thinking. I practically fell in love with elika and didnt care bout the dark god coming back a SECOND time but still.
no darkwatch? choosing whether to save the poor souls or suck their blood and harvest their life force. It's such a difference, that it even detemines the last boss battle. I kinda felt guilty fighting cassidy as a last boss. It's actually a lot like bioshock.
nice article. Hey, you forgot in the ending of Splinter Cell:Double Agent where you have to make a (gut wrenching) decision whether to kill your mentor Lambert or to kill Jamie Washington and risk blowing your cover. Those gta 4 choices were brutal, they actual required thinking over
