The Top 7... Girl gamer stereotypes

How NOT to fit in to the cultural microcosm of gaming

Words: Tyler Wilde, GamesRadar US

How they get attention: By being nerdier than thou
Where to find them: Browsing manga at your local bookstore

Buuuh: Desu desu desu! =^-^=

GR: Hey, you know a Japanese word. No, we don’t want to talk about Final Fantasy VII, Tales of Symphonia, or your favorite Bishōnen.

Buuuh: ur so kawaii!!! ~~~ ^-^-^-^-^-^~~~~!!!!

GR: Go write a fanfic, tool.

How they get attention: By failing every song in Rock Band
Where to find them: Tagging along with your friends

We commend you for trying to be interested in your friends’ hobby, and we know they should probably pay more attention to you, but either let them have their fun, or actually be into gaming. If you’re just feigning interest to be liked, you’ll inevitably become a nuisance and accidently delete your boyfriend’s saved games, and he'll snap at you, and you’ll yell at him for wasting all his time on stupid games, and then he’ll yell at you for making him see Mamma Mia! (which you only wanted to see because you like Abba, and how were you supposed to know it would suck?), then you’ll both be miserable and feeling like assholes. So keep your hobbies to yourselves.

How they get attention: By hogging your PC or Wii
Where to find them: In your living room at 4 AM with an empty bottle of wine

These offenders will spend 8 consecutive hours on your computer playing Peggle, and still refuse to admit that they have a problem. We really don't care if they prefer playing games with virtually no challenge, and spend far too much time playing them, we just wish they'd buy their own systems and quit asking us to "make it go" when the computer thing breaks.

To be fair, not all casually addicted gamers are women, but that's the market and overall perception.

How they get attention: By being paid to get attention
Where to find them: Commercials

We really don't need to say much about Carrie Underwood playing Nintendogs. We can just show it to you:

Lol, great article. Although, bunnyXablaze is a good person that saying that is quite harsh. One thing you have to remember, though, is that these really aren't the correct definition of stereotypes. These are kinds of styles of people and how they express to be what they are. It just so happens that these tend to be concentrated areas that an overall large amount of people fit into. GRRL girl to you is being natural to them, the obsessive cosplayer to you is a great time in creating a costume that takes a long time of work to them. I think the problem here is you need tolerance to other styles other than your own.

I agree with T3kT3hGrrl when she says that these aren't stereotypes. They're different ways of expressing that you take joy in a hobby. And quite a few of these aren't exclusive to girls (i.e., the one who pretends to like video games to be accepted but actually sucks and drags everyone else down, the casual gamer who can't so much as turn a SNES on, and cosplayers). I know guys like that too. I enjoy cosplaying myself. Stories aren't driven by girl characters alone. So it's not really fair to assume that these qualities are exclusive to girls. I'm not sure if it's sexism, or gaming elitism.

Btw, I'm a guy. Maybe I should get a picture of me by myself to prevent confusion... nah.

I too agree with the comment that these are not stereotypes but personalities. What bothers me is that a "How they get attention" is included for each seven personalities covered. THAT is actually a stereotype (even though it's untrue)---That girl gamers are just after attention. I actually reference that aspect of this article in an analysis paper I wrote discussing female gamers in e-sports: http://digg.com/people/An_illusion_of_power

I say "I don't care what gender you are, if your gonna play a videogame, expect to either hand my ass to me or get your ass handed to you. And dont expect any special treatment"

that was the day i got bored of: matchmaking, custom games, campaign. all i can do now is relentlessly interlock on forge in my shame.=(

Listen, I'm sure as hell not complaining about women removing clothing on the Internet, as immature as this may sound I'm guessing that the female authors are just insecure about their own looks.

About the steriotypes/personaliteies/style argument, dose it really matter?
killemall  - 8 months 16 days ago
this is definitely not my favorite article, mostly because i can see myself trying cosplay oneday, or even feeling the need to proove myself to the guys, by being all badass. Especially when i am online on Halo and decide to speak into the mike, the trash talk is no longer about skills but what's not between my legs...

#4 seems to be the only girl gamer I happen to run into.

It's quite ironic because I do not like anime or manga.

WTF DUDE??? girls play games like the farm game on Facebook. "They play “hardcore” games, "casual" games, strategy games, adventure games, fighting games, mind games, games games games all the time every day." what bullshit.
Only once have i seen a girl play a game that's not a casual game. It was Counter-strike, for like 1 minute, because she was DAERD to play it. (BTW, she sucked)
