Yeah we have those they were called Fallout 1 and Fallout 2. You don't see the bombs drop, but they're closer to when it all began and you do learn about the mutants, in much better detail than Fallout 3 ever did.
It sounds like you're one of those guys that got in on the franchise with the last one (which is the poorest one) and then think that's what the series is about or where it even began. Stupid plot, limited choices and Oblivion with guns set in a very survivable post apocalyptic world. Do yourself a favor and check out the best games in the series, back when it wasn't about conforming ideas to an old one trick pony of a developer.
As far as the article is concerned I would be hard pressed to find many games that I was absolutely dying to know more about their backstory because quite honestly most of them are just crap.
Sure we had a great time playing through COD4's single player, but not because the story was so compelling or that Cpt. Price was such an interesting character. He's a fucking caricature of a military man for crying out loud! Watch any film and play many games and you'll get the same personality! What made that game work was that you were doing more than just the simply get the bombs, blow up the bunker gameplay. Level design and varying objectives, NOT Cpt. Price were the focus of that game. The same holds mostly true for Gears of War. I wasn't going into that game thinking it was going to have some great epic story. It didn't and thankfully I wasn't let down because of it. Monsters, aliens, others, whatever you shoot them, you win. Great graphics, bang on cover system, excellent co-operative play made Gears work (not to mention the multiplayer but we're really just focused on the single player experiences in this article). Not a generic invasion story.
But there will always be those who think these are for whatever reason great stories to be had in generic video games. I know plenty of friends that go absolutely ape shit over Halo. Halo novels, Halo t-shirts, Halo toilet paper, all just so they can get that much closer to what was already a crap story. To each his own I suppose.
The truth is that if they put forth as much effort with the story in the first entry (or subsequent sequels if they so exist) as they would with the prequel, we'd be let down once more by something that just didn't deliver on fleshing out the already lackluster stories. Mirror's Edge was such crap that I have no desire to know anything more about her, I don't care about her sister, I don't want to know why she runs away from everyone. Imagine what they'd come up with as the backstory.
And don't even get me started on what those Japanese would think would be a good sequel. Their stories are already nonsensical enough as it is. What magic bullshit way do you want them to tell you why Disney and Final Fantasy came together? How about the truth? The title for this entry? Ca-Ching Hearts: Cash in Extreme Ultimate Super Number 1 GO-GO.
uncharted prequel! no idea at all what the hell it would be about, it would probably be really boring but hit me with ideas naughty dog! maybe a star wars prequel? no, i mean before the prequels, like a prequel of the prequels except it would be a game and the film wouldnt happen. maybe a fat princess prequel? it could be before everyone finds out that cake is fine just gets you fat and she starts the game fat and eats cake constantly (like she burns calories at the moment) and you feed the princess a slimming drink to make her thinner but i dunno how that would make her slower...
@nadrewod999 PLEASE for god sake ignore adadadads comments because if you give a flamer the satisfaction of a retaliation he will simply carry on, ignoring these fanboys is the only way to 'remove them' from a website which is intelligent and back onto a biased forum about how 'microsoft is fecking awesome I would totally 'go gay' with Bill Gates' (That was not an attack on xbox owners as I own one as well) were they belong.
Having only just read your several thousand word dribble you call a camment and I am now asking myself, if you disagreed with everything this article has to offer then why must you write an essay on it? If you didn't think the Gamesradar team where right about what they believed where good ideas that is fine that's your opinion but please keep it to yourself or at least give an example of what you would like to see rather than complaining and nit-picking.
ReCaptcha: $196-million swanky
Well I spose it would be
Reading is pretty hard isn't it. Heaven forbid I would have the option to read 3000 characters (remember it's optional, and those with basic reading skills may want to move along as this was an adult comment).
"If you didn't think the Gamesradar team where right about what they believed where good ideas that is fine that's your opinion but please keep it to yourself or at least give an example of what you would like to see rather than complaining and nit-picking."
Yeah first off I didn't say they "where" wrong about any ideas they "believed" in. You obviously didn't read my post, so for you, since reading comprehension seems to be a bit of a stretch, I'll summarize.
I've yet to play a game that had a story great enough to warrant a huge desire for me to learn more about the game. Most are average at best, and I'm fine with that. The cited examples didn't scream to me must know more and if they did make a sequel I wouldn't be surprised that they would put up a backstory of similar caliber as their first entry(ies) so I won't hold my breath for a literary masterpiece.
Lastly I gotta ask, do you really think anyone at Gamesradar is upset that I wrote 3000 characters (remember they aren't words, that is absolutely nothing in terms of length) expressing my opinion. Just because mine isn't in total agreement (or some asinine crap like zOmG first) I can't post a comment just like everyone else?
Some of you may call me cheap or insane or whatever but I've only played gears and bioshock. I have to agree that a gears prequel would be too short and more of the same. (in the bad way) As for bioshock (I hate to use the same idea from halo ODST) you could play as subordinates of police chief Sullivan tasked with investigating different areas of Rapture. As with so many other games you can have the choices to be moral or corrupt. Maybe some plasmids and tonics could be class specific, like for a person investigating incoming freight a tonic that gives pseudox-ray vision to identify hidden contraband.
and you may have lead ffs into a date that hasnt been covered as much i guess. sci fi..ww2 modern been done there wasfighting from 50-90s tho i guess vietnam counts in this
Do you guys really need to pump 4000 characters into these comments? No one reads them. Keep it concise, kids.
I'll agree to any Infinity Ward creation. Secondly, the reason Kingdom Hearts is great is because its a hybrid. Sacrificing that makes it into another average series.
