What it has that E3 doesn't
This is the big one. TGS has likely replaced E3 as the place where the big announcements are made. You think Sony and Nintendo gave us their best stuff at E3? No way. TGS is the place where the Wiimote was unveiled, and we expect this year's announcements to be bigger than ever.
Above: Hot cosplayers... or long hallways?
Aside from the industry happenings, TGS is open to the public for two days and commands a massive attendance. It's an experience you'd expect from Japan - over-the-top booths, cosplayers, and huge live shows. If you can make it to Japan, it's definitely worth seeing.
When? Where? Can I go?
TGS runs from October 9th to October 12th, but is only open to the public on the 11th and 12th. It takes place in Chiba at the ol' Makuhari Messe, about 30 minutes from central Tokyo by train.Oh... getting to Japan. Well, Orbitz tells us the lowest price for roundtrip tickets to Tokyo from San Francisco is $1,540 US. The average hostel in Tokyo (bunk beds likely) runs around $30 US a night. You'll probably be staying about two nights, which brings your total travel and lodging expenses to $1600 per person. Of course, you'll need food, transportation, and, oh yeah, tickets to the show, which cost 1200 Yen (about $11.33 US) per day.
Maybe it's best to skip this year and start saving up for next year. (Note: Given the currently unstable global economy, the prices cited here are likely to jump around over the next year.)
