The rise, fall and deafening crash of Sonic the Hedgehog

A teary-eyed examination of gaming's greatest casualty

Words: Brett Elston, GamesRadar US

Hoo boy, here comes the worst. After years of dreadful Sonic games, each scoring low yet selling high, we were told the next Sonic game would be choice. It would reinvigorate the franchise and prove that an amazing 3D Sonic game was possible. It all sounded so lovely. Then we actually saw the game they were talking about.

Sonic the Hedgehog (2006): Reviews start in the 5/10 range, if that's any indication of how wrong Sega was in assuming this was a decent game, let alone the next big thing. More bad camera controls, more fuzzy characters and now, worst of all, actual people interacting with all the squat, talking, super-powered critters. And another hedgehog, this time named Silver. And he's telekinetic. What the freaking hell, Sega? This game was dead on arrival before it even arrived in the first place.

Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis: Around the same time Sonic '06 was stinking up 360 and PS3, the nearly forgotten GBA was metaphorically kicked in the 32-bit nuts by this botched port of the original Sonic game. Yes, the first Sonic game from 1991. They messed it up. On the system with three technologically superior Sonic games. This is... this is literally unimaginable. It's slower and choppier than the 16-bit original, with butchered music and sound effects to boot. Christ.

These two turds, released so close together, should have sworn the entire planet off Sonic for good. But as has been the case for years, some of the handheld titles held up. Sonic Rivals, while not brilliant, reduced gameplay down to running and jumping - and it worked. This year's Rush Adventure added more to the first game's winning formula ("more" in the bad Sonic way) yet managed to keep the spirit alive.

Sonic and the Secret Rings got a free pass due to the lack of anything else to play on Wii at the time. It's alright, but the motion controls aren't all that great and after a few levels it all starts to feel the same. Points for slimming the cast and introducing Sonic to a new universe (Arabian Nights). Our review says otherwise, so consider this a dissenting opinion.

So - with all this madness behind us, and a journey that spans nearly two decades and all degrees of popularity, where's Sonic headed now?

Sonic the Were-hog...hmm...nope, doesn't sound like something to get too exited about. And for a Sonic RPG, another Mario rip? Let's just hope that they have enough money after being sued for stealing ideas (god of war, Super Mario RPG, legend of the seven stars) to make a solid title after so long.

At first I was appalled by the idea of Sonic Unleashed. But it's actually a decent game. It's not a genre bender, but it's got Sonic type difficulty, which is good after Sonic Heroes. It reminds me most of Sonic Adventure (the second version, the version that launched on the day of the American Dreamcast launch, 9/9/99) except Sonic is the star. The only other character I played as was Tails' airplane. It wasn't as good as chasing the Egg Carrier in Sonic Adventure, but still fun. Oh, and the camera can be a problem sometimes, but so far it feels as good as Mario 64. They're getting there.

I have to wonder if anybody bothered to play all the way through Sonic Adventure 2, because Shadow is not the ultimate life form. That was a mistake on Eggman's poor research. The final boss which is taken out by Sonic and Shadow, that was the 'ultimate life form.' Do your damn homework.

Actually Sonic Unleashed wasn't that bad... or maybe its because the last sonic title was sooo bad that i enjoyed it, but i did like the going superfast, and not having to deal with any other retarded charcaters... knuckles didn't even make an appearance. and you minimally had to deal with tails or amy. which is always good.

Here's how I think sega should get out of sonic's hole. Have sonic run at break-neck speeds, during the game play, have it so that he's hard to control at those speeds. Then add a few characters, you know someone with a cool ability... Then smash them down behind sonic and see if they can keep up. I.e: A multi-player super speed smash-up, so then you can race your friends and see who can get to the end first. The whole while focusing on the basic platform gamers need, the need for speed. No difficult puzzles, no slowing down just faster and faster and faster, until someone breaks the speed of sound, then...
YOU KEEP RUNNING!!! Running running running. Sonic moving SO fast your eyes will start to bleed and your finger moving on their own, THAT IS A SONIC GAME!

The extreme sonic game actually looked pretty good, would have gotten lost in the levels very fast though...

I liked Shadow the Hedgehog. His dark, moody, mysterious personality, his ambiguous sense of morarlity, being haunted by his past and the tragic loss of Maria made him such a cool character. And I liked how you choose to ether save the world with good ol' Sonic, or PLUNGE IT INTO DESPAIR AND RUIN! MUHAHAHAHAA!

I don't get it. When a company tries to experiment with new things, you shouldn't hate them for it. If Sonic keeps doing the same thing it will eventually get old. You should be happy that Sega is expiramenting with new things to keep Sonic alive

"My poor Sonic, what have they done to you?" *sob*

I am one of those people who grew up with him, but I think it must have been somewhere in between all that crap and good stuff, so I have all these mixed feelings about this. (Sadly, my relatives give me most of those "crappy" games and expect me to enjoy them. TORTURE.)

...Okay, I have no idea what's wrong with me. :( But I have high hopes that he'll someday get better... But I also have high doubts. --Jazz.
