Honestly, I don't give a shit if the comic based games are accurate or not. A video game is a video game. It's meant for fun. Would you rather have a totally shit game but it's completely accurate, or an awesome game thats way off? I know my choice.
...And Hank "THE MOTHERFUCKIN' TANK" Gilbert hits one out of the park with that highly enjoyable feature. I know next to nothing About comics (except Watchmen which I have read) and I still had a great time reading this. Maybe it's because of the authority that Henry wields as he judges Comic-based games. I think it is pretty stupid to kill off the original Batman, not that my opinion matters, unless it is due to old age. He's Batman for Christ sakes
@Hexar - Not all comic books are about men in tights. Just like not all game are about beefy men shooting each other. You should give the medium a chance.
Yeah, if there's one flaw with my perfect diamond of an article, I would have gone into the non-Marvel/DC games, like the Spawn, Hellboy, Danger Girl, Bone, Red Star and Sam & Max games, not to mention the 100 Bullets title that never was. But I'll say right now the the LucasArts Sam & Max and the two Telltale-created Bone games are hella accurate.
I always thought Brett was the biggest comic nerd there. I guess not.
And also you shouldn't knock points off Arkham Asylum for having an "undead" Batman. They started the game before Bruce Wayne was killed and I don't think people on the team were saying, "Oh fuck! Bruce Wayne is dead now we gotta wait for the comics to bring him back before we release our game!"
I liked the article though. Nice job Hank "Motha-Fuckin Tank"!!
@Hexar YOU'VE NEVER READ A COMIC BOOK!?!?! What is wrong with you?! Didn't you have a childhood?! You need to go out and get a comic RIGHT NOW!!! You can't judge a material saying it's just about "men in tights" when you've never read one!
Actually I'm not sure who's the biggest comic nerd between us, it's pretty close. At the very least, as much as I love Spider-Man comics, Brett's got an edge on me there, and he owns at least 11 long boxes of comics to my 8, but I think I read a wider range of super and non-super comics, and have read more comics in general. Perhaps we should have a trivia contest
You can't blame Web of Shadows for ignoring One More Day. Everyone hates One More Day. Spider-Man didn't recover in terms of quality until Joe Kelly's run.
Actually, I'd like to point out that fairly recently a graphic novel, iirc, called "Joker" took the a lot of the Nolan design for the Joker.
I only played the demo, but I really liked the compromise between comic Batman and Movie Batman with emphasis on Comic Batman.
I think post-Crisis they'll take the chance to update the character designs a little.
Honestly, who cares if it's faithful to the comic book stories? The reason so few media crossovers are good is that they require different things to be effective so who wants a crap but faithful game instead of a great game with discrepancies?
And wasn't Arkham Asylum already in development for a long time by the time Dark Knight was revealed?
@norid: i doubt it dude but i don't know, could happen or not happen at all.
@Hexer: Dude, i own a newly released issue of the new Star Wars Comic series: Invasion, a couple of comics based off of a fantasy book series and a preview for Max Brook's The Zombie Survival Guide: Recorded Attacks. and if your in San Diego and Comic Con is going on, get a F***ing pass and get your ass in that convention center. you'll find a lot of comics that are not about super heroes in tights.
But good article Henry, you should have a feature or at least something that pits between you and Brett in a comic Trivia event. that would be great for this Week of Geek
I think we're about even in terms of Marvel knowledge. I know more about one thing, he'll know more about another. Everything else I'll defer, because I don't keep up with DC, Image or much else.
