The Halo 3 Beta walkthrough

Guide: Give yourself a head start

Words: Gavin Ogden, CVG UK

The Halo 3 multiplayer beta goes live on Wednesday, May 16 so why not give yourself a head start with our hints and tips on all three maps. You'll thank us in the end.

We've been playing the beta day and night since we got our hands on it last Friday afternoon. You can read our first impressions of the game here but that won't really help you become a Halo 3 god. And there are plenty of spacemen already jumping around with an uncanny knack for shooting you in the head.

We have compiled a list of hints that'll go a long way to getting your foot on the ladder in ranked matchmaking deathmatch games. Print it out and keep it by your side at all times. Before we get too far in though, remember that you need to know your bumper buttons on the 360 pad.

Forget X, that's now used to deploy equipment. The Right bumper is used to pick up two-handed weapons and reload them. If you're a dual-wielder, remember to hold both bumpers over the weapons to arm both your hands. Reloading the left and right weapon is also done independently with the corresponding bumper.

There are now three different grenade types, (Frag, Plasma, and Spike) and you can only carry two of each, instead of four. You'll need to use the left bumper button to swap between them and you can't lob a grenade while dual-wielding.
