The glorious carnage of Red Faction: Guerrilla

VIDEO: We didn't just wreck things. We wrecked them SPECTACULARLY

Words: David Houghton, GamesRadar UK

However games continue to mature, the noble art of blowing sh*t up will always be important. Our recent hands-on time with Volition’s Red Faction: Guerrilla was a life-affirming reminder of this.

The new, architecturally-correct building physics make destruction a satisfyingly tactical affair, but no less grin-inducingly chaotic for it. Explosive-based "investigation" of building support structures is an absolute hoot, and the systematic, “attack anything” destruction feels brilliantly personal. It works so well that screenshots just can't do it justice, so instead we made this video to give you the full, messy picture.

Hands up who’s now a lot more excited about June.

This is the sort of destruction that would have made Mercs 2 a great game. As long as the gameplay isn't garbage, this could turn out to be a fantastic game.

Did you play Crysis at all?
The destruction was limited to shanties and makeshift buildings, hardly any of the actual buildings were destructible. If the building was made of brick or even primarily of drywall there was nothing you could have done to destroy it. In RF: Guerrilla all of the buildings are destructible. Concrete buildings, steel walkways and silos, all of that was completely invulnerable to any weapons fire in Crysis.

I find it funny that people compare this game to Mercenaries as well. While that game was fun, when you destroyed a building a giant plume of smoke would conceal the fact that the model just slid into the world geometry and was replaced by a rubble model.

I see it on several comment areas with videos of this game. If you're going to comment on it, at least pay attention to the fact that it's using a different and far more advanced physics system, not all destructibility is created equal.

This looks fun! I got MY arm in the air, how 'bout 'choo?
Also, I agree with Tasty_Pasta, Mercs is from EA and I expected more, although I suppose it wasn't THAT bad a game, just needed to spruce it up a little. But the driving WAS terrible.
Great party game though

Oh, hi there geo-mod, I was just wondering where you've been for the LAST EIGHT YEARS.

This is exactly what I had hoped Mercs 2 was gonna be like, only better. This looks like the best destruction since BF Bad Company, and hopefully it transforms the gameplay just as much. Can't wait.

I've had this on preorder since january.

This looks like it will be the game to top BFBC's destruction. I am suprised that this game was made by volition because I thought that both of the saints row games sucked.
