Really, Valve makes bad games now?
Mind telling me a better single player FPS than Half Life 2?
Oh wait, there isn't one, and even in the last several years no SP FPS has come even close in terms of bringing together story, actions, puzzles, character development and overall narrative in such a compelling package. Furthermore, there is no other game out on the market even remotely similar to Portal, which is done quite well by the way as I'm sure you never actually played it. Team Fortress 2 is an exemplary team and class based multiplayer FPS, and Left4Dead is a good example of what a 4-player LAN experience should be.
Name a company that consistently makes better first-person games than these, because frankly, they don't exist.
@hardcore_gamer1990 - Why do you make out that Gamesradar somehow has some bias against Sega? They are a freaking GAMES WEBSITE, why would they have a bias? If a developer makes bad games they should get ridiculed and rightly so. If a developer makes good games they get praised, and this is what this article is for.
Trust me, no one in the games media has a bias against certain developers because it just doesn't make sense.
Level 5 was so close to making this list is was painful, but right now word on White Knight Chronicles is minimal and a bit mixed. We very nearly stuck them on anyway, but after a 29 from Famitsu, we want to get our hands on it before we can unequivocally say it's a winner.
As FriendlyFire theorised, as much as we love Infinity Ward, we felt their output so far was just a bit too limited to call a judgment on.
Rockstar rarely ever puts out anything substandard, it's true, but the thing is that it hasn't always been Rockstar. Rockstar North used to be DMA Design. DMA were around from 1988 and a bit of their output got fairly mixed reviews back in the day. Rockstar San Diego did Spyhunter 2. Rockstar Leeds used to be Moebius Entertainment, who did some pap on the GBA. The rest of Rockstar's studios either have dodgy games on their record from pre-Rockstar incarnations or we just didn't feel they have enough non-collaborative output to make a judgment yet.
Bungie is out because of Oni, Harmonix stopped making Guitar Hero ages ago, and as brilliant as Insomniac is, we're a bit split in the office over some of its stuff and overall we'd like to see some more variety before it makes the list.
The DMA argument is interesting. Although lets not forget a little title called State of Emergency that proudly branded the Rockstar name long after the company's Dundee origins.
I agree with all of these choices, even though I had honestly forgotten about some of the games mentioned. However, what about Bungie? I'm not just talking about Halo. They have made other games, none of which are bad games. Some are merely okay, but are by no means bad.
What about an article on developers that have an ALMOST perfect record?
Developers with an almost perfect record would be a great article, you get to first name all their great games, then rip them to shreads with their one or two stinkers.
Then you can add Factor 5, who aside from Lair, used to put out some really good games.
As for Blizzard, their 16 bit days weren't bad. Lost Vikings, Blackthorn and Rock n Roll Racing were awesome.
The only real stinker is that they did a port of Lord of the Rings, which is one of the worst games of the 16 bit era.
But should their ports really count against them as a developer?
I will say that they started to develop some real crap like SC Ghost and WC Adventures Lord of the Clans, but those went to hide out with Duke Nukem Forever, thankfully.
Also, all of you are forgetting Rockstar has done the consumer wrong in their gameboy port of GTA, and then GBC Austin Powers, and Wild Metal for Dreamcast, which, should always be held over their heads.
And to the FF/SquareEnix fanboys (my self included) there's Dirge of Cerberus and Unlimited Saga. Plus, the hard to find All Star Pro Wrestling III (I'm starting to think that this one is an internet hoax)
A fine idea Ravenbom. So fine in fact, that we did something similar a while back in our "Top 7 secret shame games" feature. Great minds sir, great minds. :)
Check it out in the Want More? section of this article.
Excellent article, and I'm always happy to see the spotlight shine on developers who consistently do good work... but the Freezepop shout-out put the article on another level.
insomniac deffinitly qualify, not so much naugty dog. Jak and Daxter I sucked major ass. along with guitar hero and rock band. those games are for losers who want to play real insturments, but lack ability.(by the way, rock band drums are NOTHING like real drums.)
