Stabbing through Killzone 2

Seemingly suicidal gameplay tactic reveals Helghast are dumber than they look

Words: Mikel Reparaz, GamesRadar US

Like most of the gaming press, we’ve been taking some time lately to trudge through a pre-release copy of Killzone 2, and – in a shocking twist for a game that’s under tremendous pressure to be good – it’s pretty good. However, in our early attempts to play the game berserker he-man style (usually tantamount to suicide in any shooter that features a “cover” button), we found an interesting flaw that pops up mainly in Killzone 2’s early levels.

On Normal difficulty, the red-eyed Helghast stormtroopers are pretty formidable opponents – if you try to take them on from a distance, with a gun. But if you instead opt to whip out protagonist Sev’s one-hit-kill knife and just charge at them like a maniac, they won’t know what to do. Sometimes they’ll open fire, plugging you with a few bullets that you’ll easily shrug off, thanks to Sev’s unnaturally high endurance and (now standard) ability to heal just by not being shot for a little while. Other times, they’ll turn tail and try to run away. Whatever they try to do, they’re usually easy prey, even when you’re faced with a bunch of them at once, and you may find those early levels are much easier if you ignore guns completely and just go all Jason Voorhees on everything that moves.

As evidence, we’ve put together a highlight reel of a knife-only run through the first level:

Is the unbalanced knife-fighting an intentional perk, or just an oversight that’ll be corrected before release? It’s hard to be sure at this point, especially considering that the “tactic” is an excellent way to get killed while fighting the tougher, smarter enemies later in the game. Whatever the case, it’s just brutally gratifying enough that we’ve decided we don’t really have a problem with it.

Wow that's actually pretty funny and if it gets harder and isnt that easy on harder levels then I find it flat ou hilarious!!!
jip100  - 10 months 22 days ago
lol, thats classic. Does killing someone with a knife feel rewarding in this like it does in COD4?
dfyb  - 10 months 22 days ago
you can do the same thing in gears. i seem to remember that game doing just fine ;)

Can't wait for this game >__<, thanks to this video i now want to knife Helghast as well as shoot them in the face!
Tikicobra  - 10 months 22 days ago
I'm starting to get the feeling that GamesRadar doesn't like this game very much.
jip100  - 10 months 22 days ago
@Tikicobra

I disagree i think that they like it, however they don't want to like it ;).

Still i wouldn't call this a K2 put down article i mean they end with

"Whatever the case, it’s just brutally gratifying enough that we’ve decided we don’t really have a problem with it."

@Tikicobra: I reiterate what I said in the first sentence: Killzone 2 is pretty good.

@jip100: As for COD4, that's an interesting question. It's rewarding, but not in quite the same way, because it's more slashy than stabby, and it's a lot more difficult - and therefore more rewarding - to get a stab kill in COD4.

I hope that we can still beat thier face in with our guns. I did that all the time in KILLZONE
GoldenMe  - 10 months 22 days ago
This still looks like a generic shooter to me.

@GoldenMe

I really hope you were trying to be ironic =P

So far, Games Radar is the only website that is nitpicking every single fault this game might have, and the game is not even out yet. Ever since the first hands-on preview, all they do is complain about the game.

Its too grey, the AI sucks, its too slow, its too bulky, blah blah blah. Guys if you dont like Killzone 2 thats fine, but stop wasting energy by downgrading it so much with facts that aren't even substantial.

Then again this is one of those sites that gave Halo 3 a perfect 10, so I can see where they are coming from.

Remember guys this are the same website that gave Halo 3 a perfect 10, so it lets us know where this guys are coming from.

Gamesradar needs to stop nitpicking every damn fault this game might have. The sad thing is its not even out yet, and this guys are already downgrading it.

I've heard nothing but complaints about this game since Gamesradar got a chance to play it. Anything from "its too grey" to " its too bulky" to "its too slow" and now "the AI sucks", gees it must be a slow day in the news channel hu?

oh crap double post

GamesRadar, please explain why you have gone OUT OF THE WAY to try to convince your readers that Killzone 2 is going to be a bad game. I've never seen coverage for a game like this anywhere. Never before have I seen previewers trying to find any possible fault with a game and writing a whole article about it. Never before have I seen what is essentially a review based on unfinished code and an unfinished game trying to be passed off as a "pre-review". It's biased "journalism" like this that sets gaming journalism back and detracts credibility from people who try hard to push the medium forward.

i swear people don't even read anymore.

Does no one else just see that it's funny? The Hellghast are just like 'wtf' when you run up to them like they never expected it. I wonder if that would work in a real war?

What trophy did you get?

Gamesradar is just being honest, pointing out a funny flaw they found. Grow up and get over yourselves.
