Shiny Pokemon Guide

Everything you need to know to start catching shinies fast

Words: Carolyn Gudmundson, GamesRadar US

Step 4: Reset the Poke Radar until you see a Shiny patch

Like we said earlier, the theory behind chaining for Shinies is that the larger your chain is, the higher the chance of encountering a Shiny. However, building very large chains is difficult and risky. At some point, you're going to want to stop chaining and just keep resetting the Poke Radar over and over until you see a Shiny patch.

Where you stop chaining is purely a matter of personal choice, but we recommend stopping your chain at around 40. It really all depends on how much you're willing to risk breaking your chain (sometimes chains can break for seemingly no reason at all, which can be super frustrating when you've built a long chain).

If your chain is too small, it might take a very long time before you find a Shiny. But if you try to build too long of a chain, you have a higher risk of it breaking and losing all your hard work.

Above: All those repels can get expensive - have a Meowth or Persian in your party (preferably at level 100 and holding an Amulet Coin) and use Pay Day on your chain Pokemon to help recoup the cost

Once you're satisfied with your chain, keep resetting the Poke Radar until you see a Shiny patch, and proceed to it carefully (even if it's on an edge). Using this method, you can continue resetting the Poke Radar and catch Shiny after Shiny on the same chain, as long as you're careful not to break it.

That's it for the basics! To discuss Shiny catching and exchange tips and tricks with other Pokemon enthusiasts, head to our friendly Pokemon forum. Happy Shiny hunting!

I've tried this method and it hasn't really worked for me. I have captured exactly 6 different shinies in the R/G, R/S/E and D/P,and they were REALLY random, but thanx to the GTS I have over 2 boxes full of shinies.

I'm sure this method works, it's just that for some reason on my game, every time I get my chain into the 20's a random pokemon (that is NOT the one I want) pops up even though I'm still selecting the patch of grass furthest away from me and what-not. I don't get it, and it's REALLY frustrating.

The flashing non-Shiny patch isn't always non-Sinnoh. I've faced Staravias and Kricketunes like a thousand times when it flashes.
