Resident Evil 5 will scare you shitless

We count 25 ways these crazed freaks will keep you awake

Words: PSW UK

7) The savage villagers from Resident Evil 4 were dubbed “not-zombies” for the way they moved and thought like humans, albeit ones with an appetite for flesh and an eagerness to ram their pitchforks into your skull. And effective they were too, which is why the villagers in RE 5 look similarly nightmarish.

8) Proper, full-on zombies might definitely be in the mix too. We noticed a poor chap with bulging, bleeding eyeballs who somehow manages to stagger to his feet and lunge for Chris’s throat.

9) What kind of virus is unleashed this time? Just before the guy’s eyes start to bleed, he’s being held down by two villagers who’ve obviously either injected him with something or forced him to swallow something (insert smutty joke here). Whatever it is, it has an immediate effect.

10) We’re also intrigued by the guy with the megaphone, who could be the game’s main villain. He certainly seems to be instigating an enormous riot by whipping the villagers into a frothing frenzy. But is his power over them down to sheer bloody charisma or something more sinister? The villagers in RE 4, for instance, were controlled by parasites in their bodies. Hypnotism?

11) It’s pretty obvious the setting and colour scheme is influenced by the Somalian village in Black Hawk Down. However, by ramping up the claustrophobic tension and siege mentality as well as featuring intense pitched battles, RE 5 does a lot more than merely ape the film’s very distinctive look.

12) Enemies are absolutely ferocious when on the attack. They’ll go for Chris’s throat, rugby tackle him to the ground, throw sharp weapons at his head, wrap his arms behind his back and pin him to the ground face-first, then stomp on him when he’s on the deck. Urgh!
