I know this is going to be a common occurrence, but I've gotta go with The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I'd dabbled in the other Zelda's before it, but it wasn't until Ocarina came along that I was old enough to appreciate the scope of the Zelda universe. Even though it wasn't my first Zelda, it was the first one I was actually invested in and it blew my mind. Even though the graphics have shown their age, overall, the game still holds up for me.
Banjo-Tooie without a doubt, I learned to love Banjo and that annoying bird with it since I got it before Banjo-Kazooie. I can't count how many hours I spent trying to collect every jiggys and every jinjos. Even when my N64 broke two years ago, I bought another one from a suspicious guy in the street just to be able to play this game again.
That is a hard one. I want to say Beetle Adventure Racing, it was one of the most complex racers of the time. I loved how every level had so many different paths to choose and I was truly proud of my self when I unlocked the alien Car!
But when I look at the games I had the most fun playing I see titles like Vigilante 8-2, Mario Party 1, Pokemon Snap and Jet Force Gemini crop up in my head.
But seriously though, the undisputed best games on the system were Zelda Majoras Mask(because of the Achievement-like masks) and Banjo Kazooie(best franchise ever until Rare fucked up and made BK:Nuts&Bolts (worst game ever IMO, never should have mess with the perfect formula of the first 2) and Paper Mario(funniest game on the system besides Conkers Bad Fur Day).
Really, it is hard to pick just one game to be you favorite from the worlds best console!
Super Smash Bros and Goldeneye were definitely revolutionary. However, they're hardly an answer a critic of the N64 should provide (I was fat at the time of its release, so I consider myself the resident expert in the system).
I'm gonna go with Winback. At the time, I found the story to be exciting, the gameplay to be challenging, the cover system to be awesome, and the multiplayer to be time consuming.
Sure you had to watch the tutorials to really get down your controls, but every game shouldn't have the "pickup-and-play"-ability of shitty Wii games.
My favorite N64 game is probably Quest 64. It was a uunique experience becauswe it was teh first game I had actually gotten into like that. Plus it was incredibly difficult at the time,or maybe it was just me.
Probably Starfox 64. I've always been a HUGE Starfox fan, and when I first played that game, every day was like Christmas. It's the one N64 game I continued to play long after that console was dead. At least, until I got Assault.
I love Paper Mario. In my humble opinion it is one of the best mario games ever made. I loved the turn based combat system, and that game had a unique charm and sense of humor that always kept it interesting. The characters were creative, and each level was so unique and different from the others that there was reason to keep playing after that first boss battle. But what I love most about this game is the whole action command factor. You felt like a total stud when you pulled off some extremely difficult timing and were rewarded by the words "nice", "great", or "excellent" flashing across the screen while you sit there and feel good about yourself. Paper Mario was a complete package, ending with one of the best end of game parades ever. Plus, at the very end of the game, fireworks erupt in the sky over peach and mario together... a tribute to the very first mario games. And I think Paper Mario, like those original classics, is also timeless.
It's a tough choice, but I'd have to say it's probably Mario Kart 64. I've clocked a lot of time on that game, and it's my favorite in the Mario Kart series. I also think it's aged very well, as Mario characters don't need a lot of detail to be convincing. Plus, the game is still a ton of fun.
conkers bad fur day, that game ruined my innocence lol, pissing on people? check, getting tanked? check, dismemberment? check, this game had it all back in the day, especially the killer multiplayer that me and my friends still occasionally play to this day,
For me, it has to be Donkey Kong 64. I played the shit out of that game. It's funny because I was maybe only 6 or so, and i never got past the first level. Then one day, one of my friends came over and beat most of the game for me. For some reason, i found the video of the monkey Lanky, I think his name was, play the trombone. I laughed my ass off as a kid every time I saw that video. I also remember those other little music clips from the other monkeys, but Lanky's trombone playing cracked me up.
Either Super Smash Bros, or if you decide that doesn't count, Hey You! Pikachu. "Hey You! Pikachu, get laid! 'Pikachu pretends not to hear you.' damn that would have been a great youtube video if he wasn't deaf."
