Heh, funny story. One of my hobbies outside of gaming is parkour/tricking with some of my friends. Think Mirror's Edge but at a playground, dodging little kids instead of cops. So when I heard about Mirror's Edge coming out, I got really really pumped and, of course, preordered it. They released a really cool video with some neato tricks in it that I hadn't thought of. So my first impulse was to go try them out. I ended up breaking my wrist as a result, and had to sit and watch my brother play Mirror's Edge when it came out. Painful.
I play Hurling, it's an Irish sport. Basically 30 guys on a field hitting each other with sticks. There's supposed to be a ball and a few goals in there too, i figure...
The second biggest? well, its not that big since its expensive, but I currently have my private flying licence and am working toward my commercial, its the closest thing I have.
Reading and/or listening to spoken word podcasts, especially short stories and poetry. One of the best literary podcast is NPR's "Selected Shorts". It has a ton of great literature and fiction read by some of the best famous, and not so famous, talent from stage and screen. Next to T-Dar it is my favorite podcast. It's always a nice counter balance to the hilarious vulgarity I get from my beloved T-Dar.
I also like some of the newer grittier fantasy series out recently. The Vlad Taltos series by Steven Brust is excellent. "The Song of Fire and Ice" series has been the easiest 2500 plus pages I have ever read.
If I had a lick of talent or ability, I would play an instrument due to my love of music. One can only dream.
hmm typical geek/nerd stuff i guess? watch/read anime and manga, make some gunpla, read some books, and maybe just maybeee if im not so lazy go wash my damn car but that wouldn't count as a hobby it would be torture.
ha. im a Boy Scout. 17 years old. im going to be an Eagle scout too. I really like the outdoors, and i really like white water rafting, kayaking, and diving. along with hiking, climbing, and camping. especially cooking in a dutch oven. i make some BAD ASS apple cobbler.
I love drawing and writing. Because, you know that I need something productive to do when I'm not rotting my brains out and getting "points" for raping people, snorting cocaine, and shaking babies.
Drawing is like the Twitter of hobbies: you're putting a lot of work/time into something, may it be good or not, but it's only for some people to see, unless you're a professional. But I still love it either way.
And writing is great for my creativity as long as it has nothing to do with Halo's alternate storyline and Gordon Freeman's brother.
Shooting shi... i mean stuff. This one time i went shooting with some friends, and one of them nearly lost his leg to a .357 Magnum. He alsmost shot himself in the knee. instead, he shot DIck Cheney... Kidding. he hit a turkey.
Not just getting from 1 place to another but right proper hooligan off road driving.
When I moved to Peru I bought a 1966 convertible 5 litre V8 Mustang as my toy, but the police kept stopping me for bribes (seriously) so decided to keep play time off road.
I have just restored a 1960 swb land rover to original (the best one in Peru!!!) which I use for going into the mountains and general rugged naughtiness.
For the sand I have a Baja Bug. Was going to full tubular/sand rail but had a chance at a sand spec fibreglass tub for a good price.
The weird thing is how playing games has effected my driving. If you don't know proper off road driving is very technical and actually quite slow. For very steep or really uneven ground you might be moving at walking pace from rock to rock. Very precise driving. I used to drive like this when I played mainly FPS on my pc back in the UK.
Since going console I play many more driving games. Now all discipline goes out of the window. Big hill? Fast as possible, forget the brakes, straight line..... Trouble is this way is normally followed by reverse down slowly, trying to miss the big rock that hit your differential at 50mph!
In my buggy I just have to drift. Again the proper way to drive is rolling over the sand, very steady and smooth... now wheels spin, sideways and a tow out!
Have to say though.. the game way is more exciting, if less effective.
