Just to start, I cant remember the first game I pre-ordered. The story that comes to my mind is in regards to Halo 2. Now to set this up, I have to paint the picture of a small town in the great state of Wyoming, where I couldn't be guaranteed that I would get this most beloved game on time. So me and a couple of friends pre-ordered and pre-paid at a well known game mega store a state over. With the news that Halo 2 would be released at Midnight and we could make the drive that night and not wait the agonizing extra night to get our hands on our copies. So after much talk and a quick stop for burgers we set out that night, not knowing what horrors await us. Shortly after we crossed the state line, making great time on our journey I was ridding shot gun and had the unfortunate job of informing the driver what I had just seen in the rear view mirror. Before we had a chance to react the police officer was at the driver's window, gathering all necessary information to issue a speeding ticket. Shortly there after the police officer returned to inform him that his license had been suspended two states over and next thing I know he is being led into the back of the police car as the two officers being to search the rest of us. Without to many ugly details the police officers found what they smelled and had something on all of us. For the first time in my life I was handcuffed in the back of a squad car, a state away from home, and my x-box. After they took our head shots and got our autograph's and such we were free to head home, and that's what we did. On the plus side I got my copy of Halo 2 and loved every damn minute of it, expect the ending of course.
The first game i ever pre-ordered was Final Fantasy VIII for ps1. I had recently played through FFVII on pc and was totally hooked. I remember i went to gamestop to pick it up on release day, and I think Dreamcast was released the same day or around the same time. The guy at gamestop was trying so freaking hard to sell me on one. I kept telling him I was just going to wait for the PS2. To which he said "We've heard that the PlayStation 2 is going to be $600 or $700".
I passed on the Dreamcast, gladly because my best friend bought one and i ended up playing everything it ever had anyway. I finished FFVIII, and think I remember enjoying it. Though now I've kinda grown up, and at the ripe old age of 25 I don't see myself pre-ordering any more Final Fantasy games.
The first and only game I pre-ordered was Call of Duty: World at War. Gamestop had a bonus where you get the M1 Carbine right away and a code to download the multiplayer beta. This ended up being the most retarded thing I have ever done. My code for the M1 did not work, and while the code for the beta DID work, they eventually made it a free download for everyone. Although in the few weeks before they did, Gamestop sent me about 5 more beta codes by mistake. So I gave them to friends. :P
The first and only game I pre-orderd was GTA: San Andreas. I got it because my friend, who was an aspiring gangster at the time couldn't afford it. He would consistantly miss class, avoid his girlfriend, and began drinking Old English 40 oz.'s. I started regreting the purchase when he started calling me at 2 a.m. to ask how to get through certain missions or the cheat codes.
like alot of people, the first (and only) game I pre-ordered was GTA:IV. I had never felt the need to pre order a game before this and to be honost I was freaking obsessing over the trailers nd stuff so there was no way I was going to miss a single minute with it. I live in Ireland so I dont now how strict they are in the U.S, but here they will not sell a mature game to a minor. This was kind of a problem since I was not old enough and I knew my parents wouldnt let me get the game, so I skipped school, persuaded my older friend to drive us to the store and pretend to be me to get the game. For pre-ordering, all I got was "money off" coupons so I gave them to my friend who was very happy with them. I faked being sick for the rest of the week so I could play, and it was totally worth it :)
The first game I ever pre-ordered was Zone of the Enders. I wanted to make sure I a copy so I could play the Metal Gear Solid 2 demo that came with it. I ended up playing the MGS2 demo for two weeks straight before I ever touched ZoE.
The date: March 1982
The place: Suburban Philadelphia. Small time video store that sold games.
The game: Pac-Man for the Atari 2600.
The result: Tears, anger and the death of innocence. The breaking of a 12 yr old boy's heart.
That game sucked sucked so friggin bad. I shoveled snow all winter to get the $37.95 (plus tax) together to purchase that steaming pile of game turdery.
Yes, I am old. I know.
Don't go TDar. Don't break that little boy's heart again.
The only times I've pre-ordered for games was for the giveways. One of the first ones for me was Gears of War 2 for the free tank they were giving away. I was going to get it on launch anyway, why not get a free tank? Like you guys were saying on the podcast, I live in a sizeable suburb of Chicago and I can find games on launch day.
