First game I preordered was Perfect Dark, I read every magazine I could get hold of with any news on it and feigned illness to stay home and play it, I wasn't disappointed! The only other game i've pre-ordered since was GTAIV, took a day of work to play that as well!
The first game I ever pre-ordered was Pokemon LeafGreen. Quite an experience. I remember my friend getting it a day before it came out because he went to a store where they had accidentally put it out early.
The first one I remember preordering would have to be Mortal Kombat for the SNES. I think I was a freshman in high school and myself and many other of my friends were so pumped up by the Mortal Monday hype. I got the game home and forgot how boring and disappointing it is when your friends don't live close enough to play you. I still remember getting startled when I left the game on to get something to eat and I come back to see Reptile standing on the screen.
Finally, on the day of release, I didn't get the game because the regular-sized box didn't fit through my letterbox. The same letterbox that all over DVDs and games have slotted through just nicely, thank you. So I had to go and collect from post office, the next day. More delays.
My mate just went in the shop on the same day, bought it there, and played it that night with me watching from the sidelines, glowering with impotent jealousy.
I remember pre-oredering metal fear-sons of liberty, it was so amazing walking into that little GAME shop and asking for it an nearly getting the knock coz it was a fifteen certificate lol. opening it up was even better tho it came with a cool little comic of the prologue, best pre-order, although my order for the oblivion special edition does come close with the hand book and te coin that came with it, freakin seet.
Oh man, Yoshi's Story. I got all of the Yoshi stuffed animals too. Every color. Remember those? I didn't think so. I also bought the soundtrack, which was pretty awesome because the disk was shaped like Yoshi's head. I cannot imagine being my parents and having to listen to that though. Yeah that had to be awful.... I wonder how I lost that disk exactly.... Still love that game. I know, it's weird.
My first pre-order was The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. Not knowing any better, I had it mailed to my house by EBGames, but it didn't reach until two weeks after the game first came out. For some reason, the free strategy guide that came with the order was delivered a week before the game actually came. I was not happy.
I remember turning up to buy Super Smash Bros. Brawl at the release. Instead of the small crowd I'd been expecting, I was the only one there. I've never felt like more of a loser than I did then.
To anyone wondering why there was no QOTW last week, that's because there wasn't... an article, at least. The QOTW has been going on in the podcast and forums for sometime, and we've only just now migrated it over to the main site.
The first game I remember preordering was the Legen of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Up until that point, I didn't even realize that you could preorder. I had to do it with that game to get the classic gold cartridge. Luckily for me, I also got a t-shirt and a sample CD. The CD was actually pretty sweet, but I wasn't about to flaunt my nerdiness hard enough to wear that shirt in public.
I dont remember my first pre-order, but I do remember the the first (and last) midnight release pre-order I attended. The game was Halo 2 for the x-box, and Im sure I dont have to mention the hype of that game and how excited I was to finaly get my hands on it. So here,s my story.
I get to EB Games around 11:45pm and the line has at least 150 people in it and I see a friend right at the front, so natrually I pretend I was meeting him...and cut everyone...and now feeling like an asshole. "Im never going to see these people again, and plus its halo 2 they must understand" at least that's what I was telling myself to make me feel better for cutting everyone. They were letting people in, in groups of ten so that there was no mobbing in the store. I was the 11th person and my friend was the 10th, so I had to wait fealing even more grief for cutting all those people cause "my friend that I was meeting" left me alone at the very front of the line. Finally they let me step foot in the store and I headed straight to the counter, asked for my limited collector's edition halo 2, gave them my information...and nothing. "I remember the day I pre-ordered it, I'm in there somewhere." I said. after thinking for a bit I realize maybe some of my information was changed so I tried alternet emails, numbers, addresses...nope. By now the the third group of ten is in...you know, the people that "I would never see again" except this time instead of cutting the line, I was holding it up. After hearing many, many, many nasty under the breath comments, while trying to figure out the problem with the salesman, the third group leaves and the fourth enters yet I remain for another round of feeling like an idiot. So now the manager comes out and I go throught the proccess with him. (Exit fourth group enter fifth). Now its around 12:35 and the manager says that he is sorry for losing my pre-order and that I can buy a normal copy of halo 2. Being an understanding person(and wanting to get the f*** out of there I just take the standard issue give them the $50 and leave. I get home and finally play the game that I waited for what felt like years and quickly become dissapointed
...The next morning I woke up and it hit me, The day I went to go pre-order the game I had only four dollars on me and I left my credit card at home, therefor I didnt have enough money to pre-order the game. Feeling like such an asshole I went back to apologize. They were reaaaaaaly, not too happy with me. They were pissed that I put them almost an hour behind.
Since then I have not pre-ordered a game from that store.
My first pre-order, that I remember, was Pokemon Sapphire. I got my brother to check online for the release date, then went to my local Woolworths and pre-ordered it.
Then, the day it came out (it was a Friday, I had not school), I went with my mother town to get it. Although my mother didn't want to go, as it was raining really heavy and there were even floods in some part (according to the news) and worst of all the bus-stop didn't have a roof, so there we were, waiting for about ten minutes soaking wet, but I didn't care, as I just wanted to play the new Pokemon. When I got there I was the first (and only, I found out later) person to get the game in the shop. I also had a free palm-sized radio, that still works.
It was the Mega Man collection on Gameboy Advance; the kicker, though, is that it never came out at all, so I had 5 bucks at Gamestop for something like 2 years
My first pre-order was The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. I had it mailed directly to me in Iraq. I knew that if anything could make a shitty situation better, it was returning to the high seas with my lifelong friend in the green tunic.
The first game that I ever pre-ordered was the original Resident Evil for the Playstation. This was before the internet so I followed this game for months through the magazines. I was so excited for this title that I decided to pre-order it. It was released on March 30, 1996, which was my 23rd birthday. It was pouring rain that day but I drove to the mall anyways and parked right in front of the mall entrance in a fire lane. Just running from my car to the mall entrance I got completely soaked. I got soaked again running from the mall back to my car. Obviously well worth getting wet for, this game went on to become a classic and still one of the most memorable experiences of my gaming career. Better yet, I still have the free t-shirt that I sent away for after I got the game, which is all black with the original zombie's face on the back. Classic.
Pokemon Yellow wayyyy back when, I remember going to my local store and buying it in a blind panic/rush. Only having 20 minutes to play it before school, I had marveled at its colourful glory then proceeded to regail my classmates about how brilliant it was. I was like a videogame Jesus.
