These two go hand-in-hand... I miss Microprose, and specifically X-COM as a franchise. I know Sid Meier and most of that crew are still together under a different name, but I can't think of many other publishers with specialties as disparate as world-dominating strategy, hardcore flight sim, pirate-booty acquisition, racing sim, even a freakin' spy game, 20 years before Alpha Protocol.
As far as X-COM goes, this game should be such an easy homerun to get right. Mix isometric, turn based combat with real-time strategy, stir in some research and boom! Instant classic. The myriad sequels show just how far they strayed from that formula.
The sequels have been (in order):
-A retread of the first game, but underwater!
-A neither-nor that couldn't decide if it wanted to use turn-based or real-time combat and decided to do both in a mediocre fashion.
-A space-flight sim!?????!?!!!?
-A 3rd person shooter that sounds like it's narrated by Wallace Shawn, of Princess Bride Fame.
It just goes to show how strong the original idea was, that it can be diluted by so many bizarre sequels, and still be playable today.
GRRR I wrote a big comment on how i miss Lucasarts on the PC and my favorite games blah blah blah, but it didn't save so I don't want to type it again. I miss LA on PC because I had many fond memories playing their games. They go where the money is, thus getting back into PC games with bioware to make an MMO. Yup money is what they are about.
I also agree with nintendo. Grew up on (S)NES and N64. Very good memories.
i know its not actually dead and that this series is far from it but i have to mention half life. Valve really likes to take their damn sweet time with all their half life entries but the reason its called EPISODIC GAMING is because its supposed to be put out quickly.
It wasn't even announced this E3 so that means we have to wait at least a whole year before the next entry. I mean i like L4D and all but maybe you should focus on half life and then L4D2 i NEED HALF LIFE EPISODE 3 NOW
NOW GOD DAMNIT NOW GIVE IT TO US GIVE US THE PRECIOUS

Yes I know some of them went and formed Obsidian, but it's not all the same. Remember Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, and Planescape: Torment? Some of those games made time seem meaningless.
Space Quest. At the time when they canceled Space Quest 7, I e-mailed Sierra about how I was disappointed and how I would boycott any future Sierra games.
Anyway, I learned internet petitions are basically useless and that if a game is funny enough I'll play with a text parser.
What ever happened to science-fiction writer Orson Scott Card's Advent Rising. Wasn't that supposed to be a three part series but now it seems like its dead. The gameplay wasn't that bad, but how can you forget a story like that?! And wasn't it Majesco who made that game and didn't they go bankrupt because they made to cool of games for dumbasses. Psychonauts people!!!!!!!!!!!
