Modern Warfare 2's coolest Easter eggs

You may have overlooked these gems in the heat of battle

Words: Joe McNeilly, GamesRadar US

Modern Warfare 2 isn’t all apocalyptic deluge and end of world madness. Yes, the story hustles you from one extravagant set piece to the next on a gasoline-tinged blast of spectaculosity. But there are plenty of tiny details to discover if you hang back and poke around the nooks and corners instead of dashing from checkpoint to checkpoint. The developers have dropped many sly nudges and winks for those who take the time to explore their creation. Here are a few of our favorites so far.

Dramatic chickens

Aside from traffic and civilians, you’ll also encounter caged chickens in the favela. When you ruthlessly murder the helpless poultry, watch closely and you’ll see them perform a dramatic death animation that’s more Looney Tunes than Black Hawk Down. Perhaps this Easter egg is meant for PETA, who had a problem with the dog killing in World at War.

Departures – Delayed

Above: The least of our worries

In the controversial airport massacre scene, while wading through a mess of bullet-riddled vacationers, the flight times all suddenly flip over to “delayed.” It’s darkly humorous to think that in the midst of this horrifying bloodbath, some anal retentive desk-jockey wouldn’t flee for his life until he’d properly updated the signage. Now that’s putting the customer experience first. You’re looking at Employee of the Month right there.

Blow up doll in Makarov’s safehouse

Above: Don’t pretend like you didn’t consider it

Just think of all those haggard, lonely men, holed away in a remote mountain cabin guarding Makarov’s precious intel with no way to gratify their baser urges. But Makarov knows how to take care of his hired goons - he’s provided a deluxe novelty sex doll for them to pass around in their off-duty hours. When was the last time your boss was so considerate?

Standard Hotel rooftop bar

Above: Swanky! And yes, those tanks explode

Call us jet set hipster trash if you must, but we immediately recognized this perfect recreation of the rooftop bar at The Standard, a trendy hotel in downtown Los Angeles. Not pictured: flavor of the minute DJs, overpriced drinks, skeezy gold diggers.

Above: Suites at The Standard come with a giant black foam rubber foot, for some reason

Wow, the first time I saw the sniper perch I didn't know the teddy bears were a running gag. I thought: What kind of sick bastard surrounds himself with teddy bears and shoots people?! This scene is really creepy!

I don't know who else caught this but in CoD4 in the first combat mission on the ship during the storm before you go through a door Gaz pulls out a shotgun saying, "I like to keep this handy for close encounters" to which is teammate responds, "too true". This exchange is taken directly from Aliens.

I found one to. Not really awesome but kind of interesting. On the level team player when the guys are on the bridge if you head over to where the guy is on the phone and look up you can see Shepard on the phone with someone. Possibly plotting against you?

And I may just be crazy, but I swear Ghost has the same voice as Gaz. I hoping to maybe find out the Gaz wasn't really dead from being shot in the noggin but then I got set on fire and never found out. I'm crying.

I read that PETA blog thing...makes me cry. It quoted some dumbass 19 year old who believes that WaW's primary objective is to brutally murder dogs over and over again. Uh...NO. Then something about the next CoD game having achievements for petting dogs...hell to piss off PETA the next CoD game should have an achievement for Symtaxing a dog

You missed the 'Nobody makes the first jump' death screen. In the first mission as roach

I noticed that almost all the buildings in the "Wolervines!" level (other than the houses) seem to be based off of real-life fast food and banking buildings (Taco ToGo is shaped like Taco Bell, Burger Town like Burger King, etc.), and the same is even true for their symbols near the front of the buildings. I think that these buildings got the same treatment as the mentos in Fallout 3

Also, in the Oval Office, you can find the book "Frankenstein" on the President's desk. XD

estate has some funny movie posters in the basement. also, one of the urban levels has a warhol-esque poster of what i presume to be the developers' faces

@LawlingLobstaFTW I assume you're being sarcastic, so did you not notice the large "SPOILERS AHEAD" graphic with bold exclamation points at the very beginning of the article?

Are those exploding watermelons the same as the ones Chris was talking about f***ing way back when in some podcast?
