Marvel vs. DC: the games

Which superhero game is right for you? Marvel Ultimate Alliance or Justice League Heroes? Look no further

Gameplay

You can have the coolest characters, villains and story in the universe. But they don't mean squat in the videogame world unless you have killer gameplay to back it up. Just don't expect anything too killer in either of these games. Neither game is doing anything original; they both expand on games previously made by their respective developers. The real question here is which gaming style suits the superheroes best.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance: This is the same gameplay you'll find in the two X-Men Legends games, which is fine. They're among the best superhero games out there. The gameplay has all the obvious enhancements you'd expect. The bottom line is that this game lets you do everything you could imagine with Marvel's heroes - brawling, bashing, firing plasma bolts, throwing shields, shooting webs, etc. The gameplay is based on a game originally designed for superhero activities and it just feels right.

Justice League Heroes: Snowblind has adapted its tech to suit superheroes adequately. Still, something is amiss. Originally used in swords-and-sorcery games, the roots of the gameplay still feel better suited to that style. The combat is definitely fun and you have great heroes and powers at your disposal, but if you've played Snowblind's other games - like Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance - then this one will feel a bit off. With this game engine, Wonder Woman running down a corridor and smashing things will give you flashbacks to a burly warrior running through a cave and smashing things.

The Winner: Okay, this is getting a bit ridiculous. Marvel Ultimate Alliance for the win again! Both games are fun to play, but it's easy to tell Raven's game was made for superheroes and Snowblind's game was made for fantasy fighters. Plus, you can play with up to three friends online and offline. With Justice League Heroes it's just you two in a room.
