Careful with ye words there Dave Meikleham.... Some of us fat Americans may float across the pond and throw...... what do we throw ...... IDK Hot dogs at your house or some-thing..... I mean the few of us that own a ps3....
The core mechanics really are fantastic. I can't stress how much I enjoy the cover system. So much so I'm now struggling through Far Cry 2 wishing I could lean around corners to cap mercenaries.
Technically it's stunning too, some of the texturing and animation is incredible.
We must stress we've only played five levels too, so problems with the game's pacing and objectives may well improve in later parts of the game.
I'm pumped for this game. I was in the beta and I can tell you from experience it's fucking awesome. All of the negatives sound like the exact same things that always get cut down about other FPS.
Most the points that i was making was simply beacuse they did seem strange considering you've only played the preview code and a handfull of levels.
And also i think you should stress more that it is the preview code your basing it on, as things like Ai will have improved in the retail version. Also i would like a bit more info on what you mean by 'Gamey' since all games require you to trigger some event in order to move on to the next thing.
BTW i do like the site, however this article just seemed a bit funny in my eyes.
just like quite a lot of other people are saying the bad points seem to be whats wrong with the fps genre as a whole especially more in recent memory, and to say it's too gamey especially with how events are only triggered when you reach a certain point, well tbh i dont know a game that doesnt do that
Reviews always seem biased to me, IGN said the multiplayer to Gears 2 would be fantastic, which it is the exact opposite of. Well, IGN is biased anyways.
I'm going to wait on this one, the first just completely dropped the ball for a exclusive, plus it's a huge hype-generator, and games that have a lot of hype usually don't deliver.
the graphics are technically brilliant, but artistically awful. i'd really like to know why this game is so relentlessly grey. i mean, i guess that's the mood they're going for, but it looks like shit.
I really don't see how people can say this game fails Artistically. The buildings themselves range from ancient Rome, to Hitlers "ideal Germany". Not to mention the Helghan who you could say resemble the Nazis themselves, with an Autrach/Emperor for a leader(Aka, Visari. Aka, Hitler.) Sure. People don't like the whole WWII thing, but if anything, it keeps the concept while moving towards something else entirely. So more or less, I want this game to be soley "Killzone". Not Gears. Not Halo. Not Call of Duty. Not Battlefield. Not Team Fortress. Killzone.
b8z, you're right. Most games, especially shooters, do rely on trigger events to further progression. The trick is how well you hide these bits.
If the pacing is pitched in such a way that you're constantly being funneled forward, but aren't painfully aware of it because the setting, setpieces or narrative are constantly changing, so you're constantly focused on the action (like Half-Life 2), then trigger events feel natural and not jarring.
Killzone 2 stops dead at several points until you walk to specific parts of the map, taking you out of the action and making the transition between setpieces a little too pronounced. If the pacing and progression were better and more natural, the trigger events would feel substantially less 'gamey'.
Overall I really liked this article it told me a few things I was wondering, for the most part good. Seeing as most my likes and dislikes have already been established I was wondering could any Beta tester or the GR staff itself tell about the the controls such as the button mappings, do you have to hold down to crouch and toggle on and off the aim sight (like Resistance1) or do you toggle on and off the crouch and hold to aim the sight like most modern games (like CoD4). Either way I'm obviously getting this game and once again Great Article GR's dave
also I'd like to point out I agree about your opinion that the FPS genre does need an overhaul as far as level design, objectives, and story. I mean modern FPS's are great but after this year I think the formula will be pretty worn out!
Well, I'm going to try to reserve my judgement until I play it, but if it's as much as a letdown as Resistance 2, Littlebigplanet and SOCOM: Confrontation (the only games I own for my dusty PS3), I may start considering sending this machine the way of my Wii (selling it to people who don't know any better).
I was really hoping this would be something new and special, but it appears its just generic FPS number 8,762,592.
I'm going to give Sonys line-up this year a chance, and maybe check out so-called "hits" like Uncharted and maybe even MGS4, but I'm starting to remember why I've never bought any incarnation of Playstation before.

the fps does need quite a lot of changing for objectives etc. but tbh unless im just having a slow day i cant really think of many ways to really change it up, the only thing i can think of really, would be like being part of an actual whole army in a war where no matter what your doing everything involved and around you is constantly going, like attacks and other battles in other areas on the map, so basically having a constantly active and changing battlefield much like in reals wars, if that makes any sense to anyone.
