How modern gaming has made us into wimpy gamers

Think you're hardcore? By current standards you might be. But you're still a noob

And McFarfingham - "not that hard" about DMC? Likely not #4, if you have a lot of time on your hands.

The fact of the matter is that in this day and age, Americans - and humanity in general - have their lives ruled by their schedule, not the other way around. The games evolve to fit society - don't complain about the games, Mr. Author. Complain about society.

you say these games are easy, but only because you've been playing since the pre-NES days at the earliest. they're only easy cause you know the controls and your reflexes are quite high. you'll probably be able to call yourself a moderately good player of the video games if you can get 45 points on 150cc Special cup on Super Mario Kart.

You are pretty dense if you don't understand that this ENTIRE article is facetious i.e. the whole damned thing is a joke! Of COURSE D.H. isn't being (entirely) serious here. Do you REALLY think that any person a part of this magazine, all gamers to the core, would be able to SERIOUSLY compare today's apples to yesterday's oranges and say "they had it harder" without throwing in a sizable amount of salt?

Even so, you have to admit, he's right. Yes, today's games are far more complex than the days of yore, meaning the gamer has to keep track of a LOT more things at a time at once. But games are, in many ways, a LOT more accessible as well. While Pac-Man's controls are certainly simple to grasp, that constant siren whining and ghosties coming at you from all directions certainly ramped up the pressure! I know many a non-gamer who blames Pac-Man's intensity on never picking up on the hobby...

weren't they just complaining about games with no saves like a week ago?

the original super mario bros. didn't have a tutorial. just you. standing to the left of the screen. then, SHIT what's that coming right toward me? out of the four buttons on the pad, you figured out which one was the actionbutton.

THAT was a tutorial. that's what it took to teach people how to play one of the most important and widely known games ever.

super mario galaxy has TONS OF word balloons and other bullshit to tell you, "hey push the A button to jump" then we're showed, through un-skippable cut scene that there is something coming up that involves us to jump. then we are rewarded for just doing what the game simply told us to do.

although i do disagree with auto saving part.

EdelweissPirate: I also happen to be female.
I also happen to be a gamer, as well.
I don't mind if people writing games articles feel like catering the language towards men, because they /do/ play more games than women, thus they are more likely to be reading said articles.
I don't expect people to cater to me just because I'm a girl. You shouldn't either.

BUT ANYWAYS.
Those captions were win. xD

LOL Weird I ranted about the same thing with refillable health.

"I just got shot in the face, so I stood behind a tree and all of the sudden I was ok again! What heppened to the gushing wound in my right eye socket? Is the tree magical? Or wait, my character must be GOD! I mean he did just heal a sniper bullet taking out a chunk of his brain."

Wrong, auto regenerative health does not mean the game is easier per se. gears is designed around the concept. Enemies rush you after time so in effect you only have limited health. Play the game on insane, the way it was mean t to be played and you will understand. Lambent wretches low up and kill you in on hit and on the last level your stuck in a tiny train car with a dozen of them dropping from the ceiling.

To say nothing of the content, wtf with the male-centered language? No wonder gamer geeks complain that they don't get laid. They flatly refuse to believe that girls play video games and therefore can't converse with them without prematurely ejaculating. Wanna be emasculated? Wait till you realize I was a better shot than you when I was 8.

Get a clue that's like us going into the Cosmo magazine website and saying 'wtf's with all the female centric comments, like wtf' Or going into a farmers trade show and going 'like, wtf, whats with all the FARMERS' Hello McFly, Hello, oh, you wanted attention....SORRY.

Next time why don't you try adding something to the conversation instead of disrespecting the main audience and I guarantee you'll be accepted, and you'll get the attention you crave to boot.

Like cart00n said, take it with a pinch of salt.

I admit games are a hell of a lot easier today. Loads of people are saying 'LUL, PLAY IT ON HARD/VERTAN/HEAVEN OR HELL' whatever you wanna' call hard mode. Well the truth is, NO ONE what-so-ever wants to play a game on the hardest difficulty. There are a few that will willingly play it on the hardest difficulty, I am one of those people.

To all people piss-moaning about this article, its true. You had to pickup health packs, save at the END OF THE LEVEL or not even save at all.

I've said it since day one, have levels fair enough, but take away the regen health and checkpoints and see how much people enjoy games then. They wont because they will have to THINK about what they have to do. I am still playing Ridge Racer 6 because that game has stuck to its roots in terms of difficulty. You can say lol n00b and all that, but if you have finished the game, link your gamertag here to prove it.

Also with the ninja gaiden thing, that again is a game that stuck to its roots. If you take out the games that are difficult like Ninja Gaiden, Ridge Racer and Devil May Cry for example all games are easy.

Call of Duty on vertran isn't. It just isn't just because I have seen it that if you die repeatedly, the game gives you a checkpoint like its feeling sorry for you!

Anyway, I found the funny side in the article. Keep it up GR!

i don't really agree with all that was said but still, a good article.

wow. u r an idiot. have you ever thought to think that maybe these games have these features because of the multiplayer aspects. they are designed to give players a better chance to react to the things around them. you talk about games being harder in the past. they are harder because they arn't able to fit as many control options in. they arn't as smooth as current games. I play a ton of old video games. im a snes guy. im pretty sure that you suck at most video games.

It's refreshing to finally see someone unearth the dire failures of games in this new era. Another great article, David.
