Heavy Rain's BIG plot-holes

15 reasons the supposedly brainy epic makes no more sense than Modern Warfare 2

Words: David Houghton, GamesRadar UK

Heavy Rain was supposed to change things. It was supposed to elevate video game story-telling above the badly-written, poorly-acted dirges we currently put up with, and give us a groundbreakingly mature, gritty, intelligent and cleverly constructed, branching storyline. It absolutely didn’t. In fact sweep aside the surface gloss of stunning looks and moving score and Heavy Rain’s plot is a shambles.

Not everyone has a problem with that. My arguments over it with certain colleagues often come up against the caveat that "all games have crap stories". But that's really not the point. A game whose sole purpose is serious storytelling is a very different fish to the likes of Gears of War, and crap storytelling here is like a CoD game with crap shooting mechanics. A CoD game which claimed to change shooting mechanics for the better.

Above: Ethan looks lost and confused, and there's a good reason for that

Heavy Rain looks and sounds like a classy movie alright, but if it was a real film, it would be one of those cheap, no-name crime thrillers you drunkenly catch on TV at 3AM. Enjoyable if you don’t think too much, but utterly nonsensical. And here’s why. But first, a brief warning:

Not just spoilers, you understand, but immense spoilers, covering a large number of the game’s major plot points, including the identity of the Origami Killer. Don’t say you weren’t warned.

Plot hole 1

Above: No wonder she's an insomniac if she freaks out over literally nothing.

If you make sure that Madison survives to the hospital scene near the end, she (but not you) is told the identity of the Origami Killer. Understandably, she is shocked and aghast at the name she hears being associated with such atrocities. Not understandably, she and said killer have never met in the game at this point, and in fact are completely unaware of each other’s existence. She’s reacting to nothing, which becomes even more face-palm-worthy when she scoots immediately round to his house.

Plot hole 2

While investigating the Origami Killer, private eye Shelby interviews several parents of murdered kids and collects key evidence and messages sent to them by said mysterious child-offer. Question: Why the hell have these parents still got hold of this stuff? Why didn’t give they these clues to the police during the investigations? Did they want their kids to be killed? And if they did hand them in, why haven’t the police still got them in the (still open) case file? Did they give them back as souvenirs when the bodies were found? No wonder they can't catch the killer if they keep giving evidence away.

Plot hole 3

If Ethan is captured and taken in for questioning by the police, a potential set-piece opens up that's so ludicrous that you'll scratch your head 'til your brain bleeds. For evidence of its stupidity, try the following in real life. Go into a police station of your choice. Find a really important, high-profile suspect in a holding cell. They’re bound to have one knocking around. Help him escape, but make sure you have a conversation with a third-party immediately beforehand, and make sure that the content of that conversation will tie you to the crime without question. Then see if you get away with it.

Above: "I never broke the law! I AM THE LAW!" Oh okay, off you go then...

If you do, get a job at said police station, make yourself unpopular to the point that the corrupt powers-that-be are desperate for an excuse to get rid of you, then try it again. If you’re still working in your office, completely uninterrupted, a few days later and the police have started a second huge manhunt without once even questioning how said suspect escaped in the first place, congratulations. You are Norman Jayden.

Plot hole 4

Speaking of manhunts, the whole case against Ethan which takes up much of the second half is a farce. The evidence that makes him the definite, absolute, couldn’t-be-anyone-else, number-one suspect in a high-profile murder case? Nothing more than some highly circumstantial hearsay and tittle-tattle about black-outs and bad dreams, from his ex and his psychiatrist (tittle-tattle that in that latter case has to be beaten out of the unwilling source). We know that the cops are looking for a scapegoat, but making public claims of guilt and holding a press conference to celebrate the capture of a notorious serial killer without ever bothering to build any kind of a case against him is the simplistic  and lazy thinking of a nine-year old. Even bad movie cops wouldn’t do that.

Plot hole 5

Above: It's either bullshit writing or he's a replicant. Your call

Ethan’s blackouts can be explained as a sympton of the trauma he suffered when hit by the car, but what’s with all the false-lead origami models he keeps waking up with? Was the killer following him 24/7 the whole time with a copy of his medical history, just waiting to pop one in his hand whenever he dropped? Including that time he passed out in his own house?

Does he really have an undiagnosed case of ‘Making-paper-models-in-your-sleep-at-topically-suspicious-times’ syndrome? It’s as sensible an explanation as any.

haha very funny, not much point having a minimum of interaction if the story is crap. That is why the Phoenix Wright series does so well, with brilliant writing. guess the PS3 will have to wait a little longer for this years killer app

this article sucks.

I found this game to be more situational...
i couldnt give a shit if the story was a little bit trippy.

for your first "plothole catch"

Exactly crustdbeat. GR have a hard-on for bashing HR for some reason and to compare someone doing something ambitious with game story, story writing and acting with something as simple as a FPS story(how many times have IW actually done so themselves let alone the number of other examples to draw on for advice, influence or inspiration?)is so churlish it's not true.

I thought the review was unfair and a little short of understanding over the way the whole thing was new to all involved. Writing for a multi routed game in this way hasn't really been attempted before and for the actors it must have been really hard and really confusing but GR takes no consideration of this yet seems happy with Bethesda constantly doing NO QA testing and making us buy the games for the fun of doing it ourselves as they go patch happy later on!

Fair enough, I didn't expect everyone to find HR the game for them but GR make WAY too much of the acting and writing shortfalls in the game as both are largely fantastic which is why, imo, the times where it does falter seem so jarring and noticeable.

MW2 presented a pi55 easy task for a writer and for the actors compared to HR but go on GR, stomp on the people manfully trying to bring you something new! Don't worry that you're going way over the top with this and totally fail to grasp the difficulties and hurdles the HR team faced and, by and large, conquered with complete aplomb. It's an easy target for nitpickers yet you let so many other games get away with much less forgiveable shortcomings than these.

Hell, if you compare it to Cage's last effort it's effin War and Peace! And a truthful comparison to the joke(and remember single route, easy as a kids essay to write)plot of MW2 should be weighed so heavily in favour of QD's brave, flawed masterpiece that half would be made up of laughing at the one sided nature of it all!

So, yeah, you side with the game we all bought twice before that IW stuck in a new suit, didn't bother testing, dragged online gaming backwards by refusing to have dedicated servers as standard (as the market leading shooter in 2009 to take away PC dedicateds and to not have them on PS360 is a sick, ass backwards joke for a game described by Kotick as "premium"-what does that make Warhawk?), took gratuitous violence to a new level just for the press attention(seriously, when it isn't even something you HAVE to play how damn superfluous and gratuitous is the No Russian BS)and was a mess at launch and got worse since rather than the game trying something new.

Way to further the industry guys. Way to encourage new ideas, new growth or anything other than the dishwater dreary norm we suffer.Good job,GR, good effin job. With your attitude we'd all be stuck playing bloody text adventures from when that was the dominant genre and FPS would never have gotten off the ground for the crime of not being perfect on it's first few outings when no one knew exactly what they were doing with it. Would you have stopped Columbus and stuck with the flat earth too?

No, HR isn't perfect(it's far from it-though so are U2 and ME2 for that matter)but considering the fact it beat most of it's new problems into instant submission and provides one of the freshest experiences this gen means it deserves a lot more respect than you want to give it.Nitpicking a game in a totally new genre where there's bound to be teething issues is as brave and challenging as shooting rats in a barrel(and equally distasteful imo)but knock yourselves out. If everyone felt like you do we'd NEVER get anything new as devs would be too scared to try things except from the rehashed BS you compared HR unfavourably to here.

If you seriously believe the story and writing in MW2 is superior you need a new therapist -and some taste. I'm more disappointed than angry but just fail to see the need for the article on any level apart from the fact it's about as funny as masturbating using a cheesgrater.

Calm your shit, Mr. Houghton was writing his opinion (and some glaring facts). He is not "bashing" the valiant effort this fine game made nor is he calling it shitty. He wrote a mighty fine article which made my morning fun.

And second, stop talking shit about my favourite site. If you want your cookie-cutter articles that praise everything you love and hate everything you think is "gay" go to IGN and get the fuck off GR. We don't take kindly to fanboys here.

Look, it seems to me that whenever a sight or magazine reviews a game then obviously the staff have to stand by that. Look at inFamous or Assassins Creed (1). Obviously its an opinion so bashing reviewers is pointless but I can imagine exactly how they feel.

I competitively debate and when you feel someone is not accepting your point of view then its perfectly understandable to try and justify it with micro analysis or repetition of what you feel are its key facets. Games radar was close to 20% (20!!) off the Metacritic average and although that is ultimately irrelevant as its PERSONAL OPINION that would probably make me as a reviewer feel I had to justify my opinions. Thus this effective review extension was written were they attempt to show us what they meant by "bad storyline".

Basically they reviewed the game comparatively harshly (although i am aware 7 is still good, something many seem to forget. I mean its still an A in my college) and are reinforcing their position with evidence that im sure will be used to backup Mr Reparez tomorrow. If you enjoy it then great, this review is irrelevant.

I disagree but still love myself some GamesRadar and don't feel the need to flame.

well, seems like this article has pushed someone's buttons. take a pill. I really don't see what your problem is. the game is evidently full of plot holes. it's admirable that QD have tried to do something new but they've failed. if you're going to develop a game that has minimal input in terms of controls you can't have a flawed story arch as that's what the emphasis is then placed upon.
re-read the article - especially the opening paragraph. here:
"...sweep aside the surface gloss of stunning looks and moving score and Heavy Rain’s plot is a shambles.... A game whose sole purpose is serious storytelling is a very different fish to the likes of Gears of War, and crap storytelling here is like a CoD game with crap shooting mechanics. A CoD game which claimed to change shooting mechanics for the better."
also take a look at previous GR articles like "Modern Warfare 2's plot holes" and you'll see it's not just HR that's come in for flak. at least you actually get to 'play' MW unlike the pitiful excuse for QTE's that HR employs.
i have to agree with skyguy343 except i'd prefer it if you didn't go to ign in case i run into you there. go to gamespot instead. they'd love you over there. I bet you're a Jeff hater too!

I knew who the killer was really early on just because I have watch tons of Cop dramas and the person was a perfect and obvious Candidate. I like how they pulled it off but, if this was a movie, Critics(after a second viewing) would be like "who the eff wrote this, it has more plot holes than jumping into LOST for the first time in the middle of the 5th season..."
Gahmah  - 6 months 14 days ago
I never even ran into some of those holes. Story made more sense that way strangely. except for ethan blacking out and waking up at the scene of shephard's death with origami, that made no sense.
deviantwhisper  - 6 months 14 days ago
I for one completely agree with the article. Don't get me wrong, i enjoyed the game's ability to involve and move the player, but come on, so many plot holes, cheesy characters and that cheesy workaround with Manfred... I just felt cheated.
oryandymackie  - 6 months 14 days ago
If you want a decent story you can interact with yourself, write.
TFUPrivateIron  - 6 months 14 days ago
I wouldn't really call these plot holes. More like circumstantial anomalies. Plot holes might take away from the game. These don't really.

You need to wise the fuck up bro. Ima bout to get all EBM up in here. This is an opinion article. The reviews GR posts they are opinions. Dont get all butthurt; you can disagree with the opinion that David has and hell you can disagree with the review; but look turd, dont talk shit about the most unbiased games site on the web. If you want flowers and colorful unicorns blown up your ass go read a review on IGN. If you want an unbiased opinion contiune to read articles on GR.

A new breed of fanboy is born... the GamesRadar fanboy. I enjoy this site too, but sweet tap-dancing Christ people need to calm down about some of the criticisms leveled against an article you have no hand in.

I didn't read too many of these as to not have the plot completely spoiled but they don't seem that bad. The more I play the game the more I disagree with your opinion on it; storytelling is top notch and while not perfect is definitely enthralling.

All a matter of taste I suppose, especially after looking at the widely varying opinions that reviewers have of the game.

Plot Hole 11

What? You mean the guy who lay the whole thing out wouldnt have a map? Or wouldnt go to a dead-end, then lay the glass out as he back-tracks to an intersection?

Yeah, I have to agree that some of these are certainly trying to push it.
Cyberninja  - 6 months 14 days ago
so who is the killer was he one of the play able chacters
dante1924  - 6 months 14 days ago
@Cyberninja
I think the killer is scott shelby.

Wow, these do seem like big plotholes. Especially the one where Ethan wakes up with origami in his hand. The butterfly challenge makes no sense either.
VirAetas  - 6 months 14 days ago
My only problem with this article is that the game came out 2 days ago and they're already tossing up major plot spoilers. No, you don't have to read it(I didn't and thusly am not commenting on anything said therein). But when a game as heavily story driven as Heavy Rain comes out, perhaps you could wait just a little longer than 48 hours before posting an apparent spoilerific article? I love to read every article GR posts but this is just one I can't bring myself to. Sorry, Dave :(
