Chicago Coin's Pro Hockey (1961)

OK, so air hockey is still an entertaining diversion at the local Hollywood Bowl after a game of ten-pin bowling, but the air technology isn't strictly necessary. Rotating metal hockey players, some ball bearings  and a small rink is all you need. And in the days before polygons (and air, we presume), this was about as close as you were going to get to ice hockey in the warmth.

There were even four, yes FOUR, modes of play. There was the standard game where one ball would be in play, a mode with increasing score value for each goal, a sort of momentum-meter game where consecutive scoring got you more points, and a crazy, crazy idea whereby balls just keep coming into the playfield. Hilarity ensued. No, really.

Above: Hmmm... we'd rather stick with NHL 2K7, thanks. Nice, shiny metal, though...
