Gears of War 2’s best and worst moments

The game is great, but which parts are the greatest? And which ones fall completely flat?

Words: Charlie Barratt, GamesRadar US

#11 - New Hope Research Facility

Here’s where the story starts getting weird... and interesting. When you’re asked to investigate an abandoned laboratory of which even Colonel Hoffman has no knowledge, you expect for the game to provide some answers there. Instead, you leave with a thousand more questions.

Who is Niles Samson? Why did he leave an AI version of himself behind, and what made that AI go slightly insane? What are the Sires? How and why were they created? What made the doctor and his subjects leave for the mountains? Is it a coincidence that their destination is also the center of the enemy stronghold? Were Chairman Prescott or Marcus’s father involved with New Hope? How do the Locust know about it?

If you needed confirmation of an eventual Gears of War 3, 4, 5 or more, here’s where you’ll find it.

#12 - Flamethrower!

Every game these days seems to include a piece of fire-spewing weaponry, but Gears of War 2’s flames might be the prettiest. Really, though, we included this moment to highlight our love affair with the sequel’s entire arsenal of new guns.

The Mulcher is the perfect showcase for “meat cube” technology, ripping monsters into the equivalent of a butcher shop’s dumpster, and the Mortar rains destructive fire upon the earth in a way that makes the Hammer of Dawn seem obsolete. The shield’s a fine addition, too, though we’d rather swing the mace.

#13 - “We got razor hail!”

We’re always a sucker for atmospheric weather in videogames, but Gears of War 2 has the moody particle effects actually serve a purpose. Stay in the rain too long and you’ll be cut to shreds. Clever sequences like this, and the killer Kryll shadows of the first Gears, are what keeps the series interesting. Each game, and often each mission, offer a slight twist on the straightforward shooter.

 #14 - Sunk and Stranded

As you march through battle in your elephant-sized exoskeleton armor, dispatching enemies with nothing more a stomp from your steel-toed boot, don’t forget about the little people. Don’t forget the helpless and the defenseless, who unlike you, aren’t big enough or strong enough to carry around four monstrously huge weapons at a time.

Gears of War 2 reminds you of those people at every opportunity. Delta Squad doesn’t just interact with other soldiers and commanders; they talk to regular citizens who are scared and struggling, who don’t trust the government or the government’s military and who are devising their own methods for survival. The knowledge that these people exist and are affected by the Locust’s actions, as well as the COG’s actions, is what keeps Gears of War 2 grounded in semi-reality.

#15 - Wheeeeee!

Gears of War 2’s vehicle levels are definitely hit and miss, but we loved the rollicking Disneyland vibe of the derricks and, later, the gun boats. Why those two in particular? Because, unlike the irritating tank mission, we didn’t have to be in the driver’s position. As a result, we didn’t have to learn any new controls to progress.

Instead, we got to do what we always do – shoot, kill, cover, snipe, explode – but with the added excitement of pre-programmed roller coaster dips, turns, tilts and free falls. The only things missing were singing, animatronic pirates and dancing ghosts. Oh well, maybe next time.

the locust queen is human imho and i dont think she is the one who actually breeds locust. marcus might be her true, and maybe only, offspring.

oh man. haven't played it

exited for the lambent locust :]

I agree with pretty much everything.
Only thing is Tai didn't fall flat for me and represented how even the strongest people could be broken and of the emotional effects of war, not just physical.
And the ending seemed really rushed. Not the Brumak-riding part, the lambent brumak part.

I was so glad that Cole wasn't allowed to rap in the credits. Whew!

I agree that the new characters weren't developed as much as they should be, and I agree that the Skorge and Lambent Brumak parts were a huge letdown (give me RAAM any day). But I honestly thought that the Reaver and Centaur parts were great.

That Skorge part totally fucking broke my spirit. I played through the game on Solo Hardcore (because anything less is for noobs) and that section was completely unbalanced. The locust shooting you could come out behind you, the poison grenades were inescapable when combined with the falling pillar you have to dodge (which didn't always work right) and those fucking tickers would blow the shit out of you in one hit if you didn't dodge them while simultaneously being out of the shooting Locust's line of sight, the falling stalagtites AND miss the 30 poison grenades thrown from the ceiling. That part seriously got me screaming, "Who the fuck made this? Not the same people who made the rest of the game!"

As for Marcus and Anya's romance, there was ONE subtle hint towards that in Gears of War the original. When Anya steps out of the chopper in Act 1 Marcus looks at her like he's really interested. This combined with the end of Gears 2 (which may have been successful in showing a love story if Anya didn't do the hammy 'hand to heart' thing) suggests that either Marcus secretly has a crush on Anya and his feelings are confirmed when she shows she's interested OR they have a past. These plot points will make for interesting threads in the sequel if they choose to pursue them, although giving Marcus a love interest goes against Epic's mantra of not giving the main character too much personality because the player IS the main character. Maybe it's supposed to show how everybody kind of gets a little crush on the girl telling them what to do while playing (Cortana, Alyx, etc.)

Wow I wrote a lot. OK I'm done. Great article GamesRadar!

I was gonna say something but I think SpikeDelight said twice as much as everyone can say COMBINED.

Marcus and Anya is a little cliche, because in reality, she'd probably end up getting Chairman Prescott impeached for giving him head in his office. Look closely at the cut scenes, there's a suspicious stain on her dress.

What about the part in co op when you had to carry the explosives to blow up the door. That was irritating!

The first entry about Carmine is true as hell- he is the only character besides Maria that I actually felt bad about dying.
marcusfenix22  - 1 year 3 days ago
I wouldnt that suprised if the locust queen was marcus's mom because the queen loves his dad's work

Inside the riftworm was bad. It was not a platformer at all. It had some nice sections but it was too long for what it was. It actually made me sick of chainsawing, and that was before the whole Sires bit.

I also disliked the bit in the cave on the tank level, with power going down and then when the lights are back on there are three corpsers. It was a nice idea but I always found the turret was started in completely the wrong spot and you only get one shot before it's game over.

I found the lack of the Hammer of Dawn through the campaign (except for the lame ending) pretty disappointing too.

But it's still a highly enjoyable game.

You guys forgot about the part when Cole starts screaming into the locust intercom! You surely remembered that?!
Ominustu  - 1 year 2 days ago
It was the funniest moment in any game ever!!!!!!!!!!
SpikeDelight  - 1 year 2 days ago
Lol I did forget about Cole on the intercom! That part was amazing! I like how the Locusts reacted to it too like it showed two buddy Locusts like "wtf is that!?"

Also I figured out they did have the Cole Train Rap in the game if you go into the arcade in the Day One multiplayer map and stand really close to the Thrashball machine (looks like a foosball table) and turn the volume up. You can hear a remixed but more subtle version of the Cole Train rap coming out. :D
