Winner: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
EA | 360, PS3, PC
More than the dark, eerie hallways of Hogwarts, the living paintings or the bizarre residents, the creepiest thing about the latest Harry Potter game is the face of every living being that populates it. Mix new-gen detail with old-gen facial modeling techniques, and the result is a few dozen glassy-eyed automatons who look sort of OK - until they start to talk. At that point, you're booted into the uncanny valley of photorealistic faces that move like hand puppets. Hand puppets with blank expressions and dead eyes that stare forever into space, looking at everything but seeing nothing.
So never mind the game's sad attempt at free-roaming gameplay, or its strange tendency to confuse running mundane errands with having actual fun as a wizard kid at Hogwarts. If you need a reason to dislike this otherwise pretty-but-tedious cash-in, look no further than the face of the first wretched creature you meet in it. It'll freak you out, man.
Scratched disc: Spider-Man 3
Activision | 360, PS3, PC
Tobey Maguire has always phoned in disinterested, soulless voice-overs for this series, but it wasn't until Spider-Man 3 that he had a wooden corpse face to match.
