E3 09: Why the amazing new demos prove motion control can't work in hardcore gaming

The better the tech, the clearer the real problem

Words: David Houghton, GamesRadar UK

Sony and Microsoft’s new motion control demos at E3 09 have been technically amazing. Sony’s PlayStation Eye-powered PS3motes (our name, not Sony's) arguably demonstrate exactly what we all believed Nintendo’s lofty claims would deliver. Using Microsoft’s full body motion-capture Natal project looks like it will feel close to living in the future and having magical powers.

The problem? The new hardware demos’ technically thrilling nature has, I think,  finally shown up a fundamental problem with motion control in video games. Before E3 09, we always had the excuse that it was the Wii’s imprecision that limited the scope of its games. With that issue gone, it’s now clear that the problem goes right down to the fundamentals of game design.

Above: Amazing, but try applying it to CoD or Halo

Think about what we see in the videos of MS and Sony’s tech. Mind-blowing interaction, yes, but mind-blowing interaction within very limited 3D spaces. As much as accurate motion control can open up a genuinely liberating degree of interactive freedom on an up-close, micro level, on the macro level of full-sized game worlds, it just hasn’t got the tools. The real reason the Wii is full of minigames? It's because the condensed focus of such games is nearly all that motion control is good for.

As much as Molyneux and Iwata might bemoan the evils of the button fascia and dual analogue set-up, both elements evolved into the cultural landscape of gaming for a reason. They seriously bloody work for controlling modern games. The fact is that the majority of triple-A, landmark games involve controlling a third-person character of some kind. Whether in 2D, 3D or both, that’s the basic model. And similarly, we use it because it’s been proven to be fun.

Above: Very cool indeed, but let's see that knight fight and move

And the sort of challenges that we find enjoyable to overcome with those characters require precision and timing during the swift navigation of in-game realities. Whether we’re talking about Street Fighter or Uncharted, those principles apply. Could even the astoundingly accurate motion control of E3 09 adequately handle either of those experiences? No. Because while amazing at simulating localised, intricate, real-world interactions, the zoomed-out, wider scope of most games needs a totally different approach.

Exactly what I was thinking after watching the conferences and discussing the matter with friends and my professors. This will never work for me, at least not as some sort of adequate substitution for controller-based gaming.

No, I won't say it

All these motion controlls are a bad idea. Maybe using both a controller and using Natal for speaking in RPGs could work. But unless all you play are sports games then the motion controls will definatly be a disapointent for hardcore gamers.

as far as i am aware, these are not supposed to replace regular controllers, just be an extra option for some genres, of course something like gears or whatever would never work, but the rts idea is amazing and could easily be better on ps3 than pc if its actually a decent game as well. the wii motes are ok, better with motion plus but they are limited by the wii's graphics, power and capabilities, as well as the fact that devs dont really have to compete with much more than imagine party babyz. i will probably get this when it comes out because i admit it, wii sports is fun (the tennis, boxing and maybe baseball) and in the capable hands of sony and the definite hardcoreness of the ps3, it will not turn into a fest for casual games, they will realise when it will be best just to use a normal controller and they will use it to its full potential.

Motion controlling is going to kill gaming.
Blubby  - 5 months 26 days ago
I don't think it's going to kill gaming; it's just taking video games to a whole new level...sales wise.

Why would a company like Sony or Microsoft stay out of the "casual" gaming world when Nintendo took advantage of it and look how much $$$ Nintendo is making from it. Sony and Microsoft are just taking advantage of those type of gamers to make more money for new things to come.

I never thought it would. I could see maybe a cool RPG for the PS3 motion control in a few years, but that is because that it pretty much what showed . . . RPG stuff. But still, I doubt it will be anything I care about.

And I think it is clear from the 360 that the motion camera isn't intended for the hardcore.

And the Wii . . . we just don't talk about them.

This is what I think, I'm sure I posted a comment about it somewhere. Like, how are you going to play Gears or Halo, even SR2? And "haraldderhammer", with the "totally hardcore tattoo dude!" (yeah, right), I hope you're happy taking someone else's place who COULD have ACTUAL insights, unlike your selfish "FIRST ZOMG!!"

i agree, though i also cant wait to be playing an rpg with sony's magic dildo's :D

I'm not too worried about the motion for the Xbox and PS3, cos they are just an alternative to, not replacing traditional controls. Great article.

i really hope motion control isn't THE future of gaming. granted, it pulls in a new crop of "gamers", but those that it pulls in typically don't move past the games like Cooking Mama and WiiFit. If they do and they get into hardcore titles and are actually good at them, fantastic. The devs that do things right will get more support and recognition. But sadly, that doesn't seem to be how it works. in order to get them pulled in to hardcore titles, the titles would have to be watered down and then slowly be solidified as the new gamers get more comfortable with the real controllers and such. But then there's a new crop of new gamers who have to be weened onto hardcore titles and so forth and so on

motion control for me falls apart at the first hurdle, how many of us are really going to sit on a sofa flailing our arms around to find something on the dashboard?
might have someones eye out!

i really dont see any need for this at all

why, like the wii it will ruin the xbox for me i dont care for controls like this, the mouse is good enough but i willalways favour the control.

IN MY OPINION IT SIMPLY IS NOT NEEDED. I AM SATISFIED WITH KEEPING THE SAME CONTROLLER AND DEVELOPING GRAPHICS OR SOMETHING MORE IMPORTANT.

the ironic thing about M$ and sony trying to tap into the casual market is that the fad is over. the media is already going on about how parents are disappointed that their kids wiis have just been given up already. and it's doubtful that they'll pay for something as a ps3 or 360 after the last fad. i can here it already: "why do you need this new toy, you still have the wii?".

so unless sony and M$ aim this at hardcore gamers and pull it off i don't think it's going to work. they're already thinking of the casual gamers.

on the other hand it could be a blinding success for all three companies, that caters for both hardcore and casual, for many more years, giving them more money to invest in making us better games and better consoles. we can only hope.

these cant even be compared to wii...the vioce thing is awesome

Naysayers of motion control are probably the same personality type that made the identical argument when game companies started implementing mouse control in the early 90s. They realized that the interface was hindering the players' experience with text parsers, getting in the way of the fun. Typing "look under bed" was wrong, when "lift up mattress" was inexplicably what the game wanted. The argument against mice was that it dumbed down the interface to infant level, to the point where there wasn't any puzzle-solving to do.

MC is just yet another tool in the control toolbox, which in my opinion has gone a bit stale in the past few years. This is an iterative advance on the Wiimote. Maybe it has better accelerometers, I don't know, but the most important side is the practical application: how can it make games more fun than what can be done with the current control set? I saw some examples here that could add to my gaming experience, for sure.

I think Project Natal shows the most promise as it already showed that you can move a character from side to side in that brick breaker demo. The PS3motes have the buttons and not as good setup but thats because it doesn't track the player.

I agree partially with this artical because how do you walk forward in any of these games without a joystick? It just wouldn't work, You could wear something along the lines of the power glove for a first person shooter but just have a joystick the player would hold in one hand to walk around. But this would defeat the purpose of the motion control...

Overall though I am looking forward to see how Microsoft and Sony will overcome these problems and im sorry for the double post.
