E3 09: Why Metal Gear Solid: Rising will make you love Raiden

From boy band wannabe to brutal badass, we fill you in on Raiden’s new ass-kicking adventure

Words: Dave Meikleham, GamesRadar UK

So that’s what Konami’s mystery site has been teasing for weeks, then. A rainy field, the occasional lightning strike; it all alludes to a new MGS game, Metal Gear Solid: Rising. As many of us expected, it stars our favourite whiny bleach blonde, Raiden, in the lead role. While we’re still waiting for concrete details, below are the features we expect to see in Hideo Kojima’s latest entry in the much respected stealth series.

Nope, we don’t expect to be doing much cowering in the shadows or wetting our intestine-squeezing lycra under a cardboard box this time. Instead, we reckon Rising will be a much more action-orientated affair, with the emphasis on slaughter over stealth.

You’ll notice the series’ usual ‘Tactical Espionage Action’ tagline has been dropped for ‘Lightning Bolt Action’. We suspect this means Raiden’s mysterious electrical powers – a by-product of his ninja surgery – will be brought very much to the fore. Expect to slice and dice enemy soldiers with katana attacks (Kojima has already tinkered with these mechanics in Metal Gear Solid 3’s hidden samurai mini-game) and barbecue them with lightning.

Ever wondered how Raiden got hold of Solidus Snake’s remains, how he survived being crushed by a massive ship or just how he was transformed from moaning emo agent to killer cyborg ninja? We doubt we’ll have to wonder much longer, as these and several other unanswered Raiden questions from Metal Gear 4 will most likely be answered in Rising’s missions.

While the game will certainly slot into the MGS mythology, we think Rising is merely a spin-off. Considering Konami’s teaser site also reveals an image of a young Big Boss, we’d be surprised if Sony don’t confirm the true sequel to Guns of the Patriots – starring Snake’s dad – at Sony's E3 09 press conference.

mgs was an awesome series (apart from 4 because that was just BAD) this looks very good but mgs5 looks better (mgs3 was my favourite so i have a soft spot for big boss) this better come to 360

Well I'm guessing that MGS's developers will be drinking at the bar (so to speak) of Microsoft, and creating for them a slaughter-based, no stealth action game with the MGS name slapped on the box, and then under cover of night, sneak back to the highly-glossed, expensive bar et restaraunt of Sony to laugh at 360 owners thinking that the MGS they got landed with is an ACTUAL MGS! They'll be spilling their beer and crying with laughter at mollycoddled 360 owners. I can't let that happen to my dear 360.

@Ory

What if it ends up better? I love MGS but if they made it like Ninja Gaiden but with MGS quality I have a feeling it will be way more fun. I can see a steal mission or two being thrown in if it ends up being mostly head on. So my point being is that people who take on fanboy behavior like yourself do nothing but make yourself look stupid. Kojama is working on it so it IS an actual MGS even if it's a spin off I'm grateful either way.

I new it would be a prquel to MGS4. Cannot wait to play it. I hope its not turned into Devil May Cry/Ninja Gaiden. If it stays loyal to MGS then it will be amazing

i cant imgagine how u could work this..it will be super hard to make playable raiden as sweet as the cut scenes he is in...and the sneaking defines the series w/o it, it is really not an authentic metal gear game...im def. gonna buy it but theres no way it will end up better then any of the other mgs games other then 2

ATTENTION PS3 FANBOYS [like myself] AND XBOX 360 FANBOYS [whom i dislike]

MGS: RISING IS MULTI-PLATFORM! I REPEAT. MULTI-PLATFORM!!

HERE'S MY PROOF: go to joystiq.com & search "metal-gear-solid-rising" and click the top result (it should have 'Castlevania" in the titel)

lovinmyps3  - 5 months 25 days ago
WHAT!!??? why the F**K would kojima make MGS 4 a PS3 exclusive (the only real reason i bought a PS3) and then make this a 360 exclusive??!! i dont care if 360 has MGS 4 or this i just really dont want to buy a 360 just to play this!!
Cerberus1838  - 5 months 25 days ago
@lovinmyps3 - its not exclusive.... read the previous comments to find this out.

Also why no mention on why Raiden's eye colour is different, because as you can see in the teaser image (which is supposed to be Raiden and everyone automatically confirmed to be him cause this is "Raiden's game") has a different eye colour to which is blue, this is clearly brown.

PS: BTW lol at seeing Kojima making the most hated character of MSG2 into the most wanted to be played right now.

But what questions need to be answered in MGS5?

Maybe "How the hell is Big Boss still alive" but that may have been answered, i havent seen the ending in a wile
Cerberus1838  - 5 months 25 days ago
This doesn't make any sense though, its clearly Raiden's model with just upgraded armour, you can even see the golden shoulderplate, he's just changed the other one, also he's lost an eye, maybe Future game with flashbacks?
Arclion  - 5 months 25 days ago
im glad it aint exclusive to xbox still disappointed tho hideo kinda betrayed us well cant wait for mgs5 (is it exclusive or multi platform like this?)
Arclion  - 5 months 25 days ago
and i agree i dont think this is raiden knowing hideo he'll put some kind of twist in the story and this will be raiden 2.0:P
