E3 09: Project Trico vs The Last Guardian - a picture comparison

Comparing the old and the new trailer from Team ICO's latest adventure

Words: Dave Meikleham, GamesRadar UK

The first Project Trico footage leaked onto the interwebs still has us awestruck. But although beautiful, mysterious and artistically striking in the style of ICO and Shadow of the Colossus, the action on display is at least 18 months old. Well, now Trico has a new name, The Last Guardian, and the trailer debuted at Sony’s press conference shows just what Team ICO have been doing since then. Below, you’ll find a picture comparison between the Trico and Guardian videos and the new trailer provided by G4TV.com. What a difference a year (and six months) makes.

Above: The final design of the creature from the latest video

If Trico’s version of the creature is a cute and cuddly newborn, then the beast seen in Guardian is its grizzled, moody big brother. It looks older, leaner and meaner now. Personally, we’re glad. We’ll stick money on the brute kicking the bucket tragically at some point. And, the less huggable the behemoth is, the easier it'll be to see it die.

Above: The finished version of the kid from The Last Guardian video

The new version of the kid has clearly had some pretty drastic reconstructive surgery, as his head is no longer two times too big for his body. The art style is distinctly less cartoony, too – more in keeping with Wander’s look from Shadow of the Colossus. Finally, his robes are less Tribal in design and now look more like Ancient Greek garments.

The death-defying jumps that are such a trademark feature of ICO look set to return. Expect a platforming-heavy adventure.

It looks like sections without the creature feature stealth sections where the boy sneaks past guards. Here’s hoping these bits aren’t overused.

We say combat, but any fighting in the game looks like it revolves around the boy using his small stature and quick reflexes to get out of guards' attacks.

Seems the sprog has to feed his colossal companion from time to time. We suspect this might tie into a possible stamina bar for the creature.

The bit where the boy flattens a soldier by throwing a barrel down stairs, which then causes a shelf of debris to fall on the baddy, indicates there's some sort of advanced physics engine in the game.

Check out Secrets of the Project Trico trailer revealed for in-depth insight into why we reckon The Last Guardian could well be a prequel to Shadow of the Colossus.

Nice. The comparisons are pretty useful. The creature has changed about as much as I thought (though I think the new version is cuter as well as fiercer. How odd.)
But I hadn't remembered quite how much the kid had changed.

Also, I dunno about fighting. The kid couldn't even struggle out of the guards arms there. I'd think all the fighting would be related to y'know...The big monster.

i wanna know how this is gunna play if its gunna be all running as the boy or all flying on the creature thing- which let's face it will use the sixaxis or depending on its release, the new ps3motes(if youve played eragon youll know how i mean) or maybe a mixture of the 2 or something completely different.

I thought the old one was fiercer. the thing's head looks like a dog's sort of, and I like dogs. I don't thing the gameplay's going to be my thing though, it looks like PoP sort of, and I never really cared for those games. I respect them, but I didn't like them.

cool different games like this, Little Big Planet, Valkyria Chronicles, and Flower that make me want to buy a PS3. Not games like Killzone and Metal Gear which, while they still are very good games, don't really do anything super different.

Looks awesome. I hope their next game is more in the vein of Shadow though. I think I'm gonna go back and replay ICO.

I am Norwegian King of Names!

I'm genuinely excited for this. In my opinion, the three best developers working today are Valve, Infinity Ward and Project ICO. They can do no wrong.

The 360 could run this game just fine. It's just most likely that because Fumito Ueda & Team Ico have only released their past games on the PS, that this one would be as well. Who expected FF XIII to be announced for the 360? I believe it would be safe to say that if both machines can run FF XIII beautifully, that they both could run Trico/The Last Guardian too. I can't wait for this game either way(I love my PS3 & 360... & Wii too), I consider Ico & Shadow of the Colossus to be amongst my very favorite games ever made. Looks good so far!

Apparently, the creature (which is actually named Trico) needs to be cared for, either by feeding it barrels or removing the arrows and spears in its body.

adultcrash-we won't ever know what tyhe 360 could/couldn't run as regards to PS3 exclusives but while there are some things more easily done on 360 there are instances where, while getting the most out of PS3 by working in parallel, you'll get lighting and physics effects beyond what anyone has shown on 360.

Am I sure that 360 couldn't do this stuff? No, but while Son gives theur first and second parties enough time to bring the best fom the hardware the MS third party model doesn't allow anyone to really push the hardware-atm multis like LP2 and RE5 are the best looking 360 games and Uncharted1 and 2 look better than them let alone Killzone2 or GOW3 or, lets face it, GT5.

We can't say if 360 can or cant do what PS3 has and likely we won't ever know so we should prolly stop the comparisons-esp on mp games optimised for neither, eh?
