E3 09: Left 4 Dead 2

See all the gory details. New Survivors. New safehouse. New weapons

Words: Tyler Nagata, GamesRadar US

New gameplay footage and details on Left 4 Dead 2 continue to roll in as E3 presses on. Here’s everything we know so far about Valve’s sequel to last year’s multiplayer zombie murder-thon.

Left 4 Dead 2 will move the zombie apocalypse to the southeastern states of the US. According to Valve, the game’s new campaigns will have you traveling through Savannah, Georgia and the bayou country with a climax in New Orleans’ French Quarter.

But don’t expect to see the last of the original survivors. There will be elements in the new plot that drop hints on what happened to original four: Louis, Bill, Francis and Zoey. We’ve also heard that the game’s plot will focus more on connecting the events in each of the individual campaigns this time around.

Above: Unlike the original, Left 4 Dead 2 will mostly take place during the day

Above: Still, it’s clear that some areas will still take you through dark corridors like the original

The four new survivors are Nick, Ellis, Rochelle and Coach. Expect more details on all four in the August issue of PC Gamer, which should be hitting newsstands on June 23. Here’s what we know about two of the new characters so far. The woman with the baseball bat on the far right in the image below is Rochelle. She’s a cable news anchor and will be on the scene of the apocalypse, “DOING IT LIVE!” The burly man in the middle is Coach. He’s a high school PE teacher – and according to the trailer, he’s “a praying man.” But obviously, he’ll need to “pray harder.”

Above: Coach is wielding the chainsaw, while Rochelle stands ready with a baseball bat. You can find out more in the August issue of PC Gamer

Expect melee weapons to play a larger role in Left 4 Dead 2. So far, an axe, chainsaw, frying pan, and baseball bat have been confirmed. Check out the videos below for footage of the melee weapons shown so far and some quick gameplay footage that’ll give you an idea for the new look and feel of the sequel.

Of course, not everyone’s happy about the recently announced sequel. In fact, many fans feel jilted. Should Valve have been producing more patches and updates for the first Left 4 Dead instead of working on a sequel all this time? Should they have been focusing on following up on their recently released Survival Mode DLC with even larger updates like they’ve been doing with Team Fortress 2? And where the heck is Half-Life 2: Episode 3? What do you think? Does Left 4 Dead 2 indicate that Valve’s got their priorities mixed up? Weigh in by posting your comments below.

in my opinion i think that we shouldn't really think of this as a sequel even though it has "2" in the title, i think this will be like a parallel game and they will release dlc and patches for both at the same time.

also i really wish there was a video of the chainsaw in action that would be the best

Why wouldn't they just release this is DLC, i understand the appeal of all that delicous money Valve but i would be willing to pay for content like this. Mind you i'm sure this isn't putting a damper on the development of whatever there doing with Half Life.

I don't want L4D2! It's just valve trying to rip everyone off again! The last one came out in, like, october or something, less than a god damn year ago, WITH 4 CAMPAIGNS! 4! WTF? Give us some more campaigns, not a new game altogether. Valve suck!

I understand the criticism, but the thing is: I got my $60 worth out of L4D1 long ago and this game will fucking ROCK! I'll be buying it the DAY it comes out and I'm going to play it ALL DAY LONG.

Im just a bit pissed that we wont see any more Left 4 Dead Updates like the survival mode. Ive been playing TF2 for a long time and the main reason I come back to it is for the updates.

or how about...

Left 2 Die

or instead of Left 4 Dead 2

Left 4 dead Pt 2

or no number...Left 4 Dead: Apocalypse i dont know i dont like the "2" in it though
_D-Man_  - 5 months 18 days ago
I find nothing wrong with them making a number 2 and working on DLC for number 1. It has endless replay value so some buyers of number 1 might not even bu number 2.

this look awesome!

the anti-spam words are "man candles" :D

Should Valve have been producing more patches and updates for the first Left 4 Dead instead of working on a sequel all this time?

Yes

Should they have been focusing on following up on their recently released Survival Mode DLC with even larger updates like they’ve been doing with Team Fortress 2?

Yes

And where the heck is Half-Life 2: Episode 3?

Good question

What do you think?

The above and below gives you a pretty good guess.

Does Left 4 Dead 2 indicate that Valve’s got their priorities mixed up?

In the short term, yes. In the long term, hopefully not. I sincerly hope this is a one off move from Valve since they are a beacon of customer service and care in this industry which far too often forgets, or simply doesnt give a damn about its customers. All the minor gameplay changes, improvements to the AI director, and even additional charaters would have been best served as additions to the origional left 4 dead, therefore serving the customers and fans, and not milking them for profit. This game wont be much better than the first, and having looked at many gameplay trailers, in some ways it doesnt quite live up to the first. Valve have always given their games and the players a massive ammount of care with patches and improvements in the past and sequils have always been a while in waiting, but also always make vast and numerious improvements, Left 4 Dead 2 means l4d will not be serviced with the amount of updates as Valve PROMISED its customers, and the short time between the 2 games means that it is extremely unlikely to be a vast improvement on the first, and maybe no real improvement atall, just a bit different. All this leads me to worry about how Valve may be changing in their approach to development and customer service, and how this will effect the fans of their work in the future.

In the commentary that I posted, on June 1st, I said that 'A mall level by itself would not redeem this game'. If Valve wants to save this sequel then Valve needs to think about diversity. First; alter the characters. The businessman, the kid, the diva, and the coach need visual overhauls now. IMPORTANT Valve should expand on the voice talent from the first game and aim for that good voice acting with these new survivors. NEXT Melee weapon combat is still very questionable; WTF, cinerary ammunitions; Hazmat suits; a silenced automatic pistol; Valve, this is not a T-Rated title; this is not HL3; and, this is not a spy game. Now, there seem to be a lot of high fence boundaries in the beta video. Valve needs to use more abandoned and partially dismantled fortifications to suggest that these previously defended areas became overwhelmed. And, where is Duke Nukem?

Making this game a sequel instead of an expansion is a huge mistake on Valve's part. I'd really like to hear the thinking behind the decision.
L4D is a pretty great game, and definitively a hit critically and commercially. But it came out less than a year ago and the most common complaints/criticisms are "Not enough levels" and "Not enough weapons".
Though the are addressing both of these with the new game, releasing it as a separate title means that they are going to be competing with themselves. Very, very few people who didn't buy L4D1 are going to buy L4D2 because anybody who was even remotely interested in the genre bought the game (especially when it was on sale). But nobody is going to buy L4D once L4D2 is released, so sales on that will tank. So basically Valve is taking the strong player base they have and splitting it between L4D players(waiting for the inevitable sale price drop of the sequel) and L4D2 players, which means fewer players online in both games. Basically, if they start L4D2 at full price they are going to see poor sales at the start until they have a sale or a price drop. If they had marketed it as an expansion, they could have sold L4D1+expansion for the full price, and the expansion alone at the sale price(which they are going to be forced to do anyway).
Also, people would be much more tempted to go back, after a few months, and play some of the old levels if it was the same game, as it is now nobody is going to be playing L4D1 at all in a year.

I really want to know what they were thinking on this one.
