oh my god my parents do almost everything on that list. my dad did try playing Halo with me for a while but he eventually stopped. And he has the current worst score on Guitar Hero: World Tour known to man.

sucks.

My mom says I'll turn out to be a killer when I play FPSs because she says it will warp my brain. My mom's not even old she just turned thirty.

I always seem to play one system at a time, I'll play system A for a few months without playing any others and then I'll do the switch to system B and do the same thing and then I'll move back to system A or I'll move on to system C. Anyway, my point is, my Mom always seems to just learn the name of one system just when I move on to another, for example:

I used to play PS2 alot when I first got it, but, since my Mom used to play N64 with me she would always call it a Nintendo, but then, when my brother bought a gamecube and I started to play that alot, she started to call it a playstation. After a while, when I was getting back into PS2 she started calling it a gamecube. And when I got a Wii she started saying Playstation again. After having my Wii over a year I bought a 360 which she called Wii, when my 360 red ringed and I started playing Wii again, she started saying Xbox.

So while my Mom is smart enough to know that there are different systems with different names, she pretty much never gets the name right.

When I was a kid in the 80s, my Dad's favorite thing to say regarding games was "get to a stopping point and turn it off." This was especially infuriating to my brother who had spent the afternoon getting to world 8 in SMB3. No saves back then, so I guess until you beat the game everything was a stopping point!!!!

the author of the article forgot about including "Stop playing those videogames or you'll ruin your eyes." My grandmother always tells me that.

I've got a lot to comment on here. This was a great article, btw. Dugg.

Let's begin.

"They won't help your career"
That's asking for all entertainment to be abolished.
"Misunderstanding the technology"
I've heard that way too many times. And it's not just with video games, pretty much all technology. They believe anything will explode or malfunction if kept on a long time, disregarding the quality control procedures that ensure they won't do that, and the amount of lawsuits that would occur if common household appliances did that.
"Worrying you're addicted"
Sure, like there aren't any worse recreational habits. Sigh.
"Thinking games are for kids"
Thankfully, I've not heard that from my parents. They understand ratings, and the limitations of ratings. But others still have that point of view. It's annoying
"Games are too violent"
Sure, and the movies you watch and the news you get isn't. Where's that graph with the declining murders against violent video game releases?
"Getting names wrong"
I'm happy my parents don't.

I'm glad that my parents are not like that. My dad is 40-something and he got his PS3 (granted he doesn't buy good games most of the time. But he is pretty smart when it comes to systems. My mom on the other hand doesn't play much other than the Wii and sometimes the old PS1 games. But I tell her about every last bit of knowledge I get about games, so even though she does not play games that much... she knows way more than my dad. XD

You won't believe what my Dad said last year!
"I think that Wii was the smartest investment you've made in a while."
Can you believe that?! Jeez, Dad! It's 2009! Get with the program!

But seriously, he said he'd pick up a DSi as soon as Nintendo releases a spreadsheet for it!

i am always hearing stuff like this i am definitely using that defense for when she says i am addicted to videogames

Ahem...now I am the parent, and a successful high school teacher. I pwn most of my students online! Bwahahahahahaha! Tis fun to play with them online though. Nothing like sniping your favorite student in Killzone2.

And, how else am I going to get my kids ahead unless they are attuned to technology?

I must be the worlds coolest dad! Not only do I understand most tech but I also use my little lads education as an excuse for playing loads of jrpgs with him " to help his reading and comprehension skills".

Sadly, however, my mum was right when she said "if you play them games all the time your TV will die". It's scandalous but my first HDTV had a "game mose" and when you used it it ended up mking the screen go all ble and pixellated and finally dead completely! When I read the (very) small print on my Samsung it actually said something like the TV is not to be used for gaming in "game mode"! I realise my mum had a lucky shot(and me an unlucky experience) but she was still, annoyingly, correct and Samsun were being complete gits!

Muc of the article is bang on though, sadly-just not about your higher quality dads like myself! Even if my 7 year old now has a dangerous obsession with slightly niche Japanese role players! He's a grinding machine!

Great and sad at the same time. I wonder what our generation will not understand.
