Call of Duty: A history in video

Join us for a journey to the center of the Duty

Words: Joe McNeilly, GamesRadar US

The original Call of Duty went on sale on XBLA this week, bringing the game that started it all six long years ago to consoles for the first time. Lucky for you, we just uncovered a strategic stockpile of Call of Duty videos going back to the series’ inception in 2003. Won’t you come for a spin with us in our videomatic time-bender and watch the series evolve before your very eyes?

Call of Duty (2003)

Infinity Ward was founded by many of the lead developers responsible for Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. Out from under EA’s boot, they quickly found themselves another boot to toil under at Activision. The flagship release was on PC, with inferior console versions, dubbed Call of Duty: Finest Hour, following shortly thereafter.

Guys, you forgot CoD 2: Big Red One.

It actually haves to get your squad to die bit to bit.

Also the PS2 and Wii version of Cod 3 was different too...

Medal of Honor will never be able to get back its former glory. The last good MoH game was Frontline. CoD really needed the Modern Warfare facelift, I don't think it will do the same for MoH.

I remember all of these, I was pretty disapointed with both of Treyarch's games though. WaW felt like a rip-off of CoD 4 in a WWII setting. I liked it, it just felt like they lacked innovation (except for zombies!!).

Wow. I am still moved by some of these trailers (CoD3 and WaW just made me feel dead inside, but maybe that is just because I prefer IW to Treyarch). I laughed (no more luls for me until after Xmas) when I saw what you guys (GR) said about "CoD: Finest Hour", because it was the first CoD I played, and I still loved it (not as much as I do now. MW and MW2 FTW!)

P.S. Sorry about what happened to all the PC gamers out there in MW2. Hopefully they will release some servers and things to mod later on, so that you guys can keep making the gaming world a better place (I have played at least 5 PC games: Unreal Tournament III, a great game in my opinion; Warcraft 3, which seemed a lot like tower defense to me; WoW, which was boring; Gears 1, although I just bought it at Circuit City right before they went under for the extra chapter; and Garry's Mod, which was one of the most fun things I have ever done (nothing says fun like attacking the G-man with a TF2 turret that keeps getting thrown around by a turbo car))

Wow. You guys missed a shitload of games(4). Sorry, but I just happen to like CoD: United Offensive more than the others in the series. Yes more than the modern ones.

Why nothing on Big Red One? That game still has me and my bros talking about it, and to this day, we *still* mourn the death of Brooklyn. A game with that kind of impact should be mentioned at least.
