It's not dead yet - five titles managed to turn our heads during the world's biggest game show

Baten Kaitos Origins

Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Monolith Software / Namco Bandai / tri-Crescendo
Release Date: September 25, 2006

Nobody really expected a sequel to cult-classic RPG Baten Kaitos, but here it is - and better yet, it's primed for the US. In many ways, this game follows in the footsteps of the original, casting you as a winged youth on a quest to collect magical cards in a world of mystery.

What we really like about the sequel is its darker and more complex story - it appears to stand head and shoulders above the original's brain-dead adventure yarn. The graphics are another place this one stands out - the world of Baten Kaitos Origins is unlike anything you've seen before (except its predecessor, of course). We're not quite convinced by the changes to the battle system, but hey... benefit of the doubt, for now. It's just nice to see the GameCube exit stage left with one more strong RPG title in hand.
