Stand By Me
Another of the King weepies, Stand by Me is based off a novella called “The Body,” and features four boys - fat Jerry O’Connell, now-dead River Phoenix, Will “Star Trek” Wheaton, and Corey “Corey Feldman” Feldman - hiking to find a dead body. It’s one of those coming-of-age dramas about growing up, fighting off bullies (Keifer Sutherland at his dickiest), and outrunning trains. If you were ever a 12-year-old boy, then you probably secretly love this movie. To be honest, the features are kinda lame; the best of which is a soundtrack of the oldies’ music in the film, including “Yakity Yak” and “Stand by Me.” No HD version either.

The Shining
You may have heard of this smallish thriller - something to do with a haunted hotel, a boy with telepathy, and one very pissed off Jack Nicholson. Directed by cinema mastermind Stanley Kubrick, the Torrance family plays caretaker for the Overlook Hotel, known for swank parties and vague allusions to mass murders. Besides the gorgeous cinematography (pioneering steadycam shots!) and overall ghost-related creepiness, nothing beats a tormented, axe-wielding Jack screaming “Here’s Johnny!” Finally, we get a Blu-ray release with lossless Dolby Digital 5.1 sound and an amazing range of color and textures in the hi-def picture transfer. Special features are sparse but include a couple interesting behind-the-scenes featurettes.
