1408
When you have cinema’s greatest badass, Samuel L. Jackson, describing 1408 - supposed haunted locale of the Dolphin Hotel - as “An Evil [effing] room,” you stop everything you’re doing and listen to the man. When researching his next book about ghosts, John Cusack fails to heed this warning, and spends most of the film struggling to survive one hour in the haunted suite. 1408 slowly builds tension before going batshit-insane with twists abounding. Admittedly, the film’s pacing gets a bit clunky, but it’s one of the better “haunted house” movies around. No HD version either, but there is an extended cut of the movie complete with several alternate endings guaranteed to be better than I Am Legend’s.

The Shawshank Redemption
Based off a novella, Tim Robbins befriends Morgan Freeman after being wrongfully imprisoned in Shawshank Penitentiary for a murder he didn’t commit. The film chronicles their friendship and how Robbins plans his ballsy escape, and no, there aren’t any ghosts or insane twists. In fact, Shawshank’s widely regarded as one of the best films ever made, period. Special features on the 10th Anniversary disc include a bunch of long-winded retrospective featurettes looking back on the film, and a 24-minute spoof called, “The Sharktank Redemption.” No HD version yet.

The Green Mile
Yet another prison film, this one comes sprinkled with supernatural powers. A wrongfully accused inmate, John Coffey, waits for the electric chair on death row - the so-called “green mile” for its faded linoleum floors. The crazy twist is that his hands have crazy healing powers. Even if you have figured out the religious symbolism with his initials being “J.C.”, we still recommend due to the awesome cast which includes Tom Hanks, Michael Clarke Duncan, and Sam Rockwell. The 2-disc special edition features are plentiful including a feature-length making-of. No HD here - we’re sensing a pattern.
