Cod4 wasnt better than Halo 3.They are even in what they do best.Dead Space better than Bioshock? No fucking way.Bioshock was getting 10s everywhere and Dead Space didnt.I agree with Sandz_001 because next year is going to be the best in gaming.Killzone 2,Final Fantasy XIII and Versus XIII,Resident Evil 5,Street Fighter IV,Halo Wars,Halo 3 ODST,and MAG.Its going to be a great year!!!!!!
Id have to agree, i meanlook at last year companies (besides ninty of course) threw us everything they had, and an egg sandwich, i mean 08 while i love the games that came out, there just isnt the wow factor of wandering through rapture, or trying to stop several nukes from hitting the us that factor was just absent from most games (Left 4 Dead pats on the back to you), i mean come on 08 was just not as special
Dead Space was better than BioShock. It was just plain scarier and more immersive. But I will say that the inventory system in Dead Space made me wonder if whoever came up with it never heard of pausing.
CoD:WaW just plain sucks compared to CoD4. It's like Treyarch is spiteful of players who like good graphics and original ideas.
Halo 3 and Gears of War 2 are the best shooters in their sub-genres, 'nuff said.
I've only ever played Rock Band once and Rock Band 2 twice, but I've owned Guitar Hero 2 & 3. I can honestly say that Rock Band 2 is simply the best music game out there.
There's just no comparison. At all. Galaxy is one of maybe 5 good games out on the Wii, and City Folk is just another Wild World. Nintendo really has to get their shit together...
naw i think 08 will be a special year to gamers simply for the massive (an really decent) sequals to hit the shelves
niko has redifined a major franchise not to mention fallout or the swish new pop (even tho the prequals pre-date 07 this years way better)
2008 Year of The Gamer
ffXIII is gona suck i know it! they should just remake the brilliant ff stories of yore
none of this scifi rpg crap
i think journalists will always refernce an older game to give the reader a viewpoint as to where 2 look what the writer is trying to say. the 2008 games they compared to the 2007 games were sequels or in the same genre. prototype is grand theft this far cry 2 has been called grand theft africa so on and so on.with so many developers trying to make the next this game killer why not just tweak the originals and throw in a few ideas. id love 4 sum1 to try to make a new okami killer or a game that makes ico just walking around with some chick. innovative games fall by the wayside all the time and in a business you give the ppl what they want. and journalists still focusing on what sold well for the past two years only adds fuel to the flame.
There is a very simple reason many of you liked Dead Space better than Bioshock. The GR staff can't say this reason to you, because they don't want to alienate fans or insult loyal surfers- but I can, so I will.
I enjoyed Dead Space. But to compare it to Bioshock is like comparing apples to ambrosia. Now I understand that most of you don't know what ambrosia is, but that brings me to my point:
Bioshock is just plain too deep for many gamers. You say it's boring, that's because your only paying attention to what's on the screen.
Ok, man with a wrench and a mask- not very scary. But think about who that man is, who he was. How it got to be that he was chasing you down the abandoned corridors of this dystopia screaming: "Wait! I'm just lonely- I'm lonely!!"
Instead of just taking pictures of the people Cohen tells you to kill- stop and think: Why THESE men? Who were they to him?
And did you bother to play through the whole game? Do you understand what happened to this city? This place meant to be a scientist eden- that in the end became every man's nightmare?
No, probably not considering your saying Dead Space is better.
Like I said: Bioshock is just plan too deep for many gamers. The makers weren't content to simply jump mutants out of heating ducts. Anyone can be scared by a monster that says boo. Bioshock took it deeper.
The point of Bioshock is to make the moment of fear that startling a player brings pale next to the moments of horror the revelations of it's story leave with you.
For once we can say that a video game had a plot that actually rivaled the books we read. Bioshock is a literary gift and a gaming confection! Dead Space is a whole bunch of borrowed cliches.
So yea, I liked Dead Space. LIKE. But I LOVED Bioshock.
Do yourself a favor and play it again.
Yeah I totally agree with that Bioshock has an incredibly deep story and that's why I personally loved it. The thing is when it comes to gameplay it's a copy of System Shock 2 and another FPS, albeit a good one. I think that the people saying they like Dead Space more like it not for the story, but because they think that the combat and interesting enemies make it better. From an artistic standpoint Bioshock kicks the shit out of Dead Space and that's probably what Charlie was getting at. In terms of gameplay they are rather different. Dead Space might have borrowed quite a lot from varies games and movies, but the foreign, yet familiar enemies in the form of reanimated dead bodies that have weak points other than the head or some glowing thing is a rather refreshing form of combat
(not in a harsh tone)I don't know how you can judge a whole year's worth of games on five games that seem very minmally connected. I am tired of this COD4 vs. COD5 debate. COD 5 is a good game but because COD4 had more evolution though I do agree it was a better game, I love both though. Dead Space connected to BioShock, WTF? One is third person the other is first person. Same thing with Halo 3 compared to GOW 2. I know people who hate one or the other. You can't judge two different platforms on the same basis really. Also, just because Halo 3 maybe has more fans doesn't mean it's a better game to someone personally. That sounds weird but I think you know what I mean. Overall this was another good year for video games, I don't think you should judge a year of video games though as either great or crap. There isn't an extreme like the endings to BioShock, there is some middle ground.
World at War has better weapins than CoD4, has better maps, and better multiplayer modes (capture the flag, war, ect.)
p.s. HALO 3 SUCKS GINORMOUS MOOSE TESTICLES AND BIOSHOCK WILL FU** DEAD SPACE UP THE A** CAUSE THAT'S HOW BIOSHOCK ROLLS BIT**ES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I personally preferred Dead Space to BioShock. Better gameplay, better storyline, more depth, and a departure from the mindless tedium of run and gun. To say that one copied the other is fairly tiresome as it takes more than a year to develop and produce a game. It's as if we expect them to scrap a project just because a game in the same genre came out the year before. The only things they really had in common were the ability to collect information for backstory(as seen it Splinter Cell, the Elder Scrolls series, and the Silent Hill series) and the ability to use stores and upgrades (as seen in more than a couple non-run and gun sci-fi game for the last few years, the majority of RPGs), and mutants (in every kind of media, be it Film, Novel, Serial, and hell, cartoons and kiddie shows). My god, by that logic, BioShock is yet the (X)teenth game to copycat the original implementer of such. When it gets down to it, they both have as much in common with each other as Halo and Space invaders. They are both sci-fi, and that is about it. Don't get me wrong, BioShock was my favorite game last year, but I'm not afraid to admit that it was surpassed by Dead Space.
Fallout 3 (though I suppose that was more-of-the-same after Oblivion) Burnout Paradise, Braid, Metal Gear Solid 4, Left 4 Dead, and LittleBigPlanet. Hell, especially LittleBigPlanet. Your article makes a few good points, but to me it seems like a bit of selective memory. Imitators went nuts this year, to be true, but they do that every year.
