I highly recommend you check out the Japan-only Indie-developed(by one guy) Touhou series for it's great music(Visit http://touhou.wikia.com/ for more information). I'm telling you, their tunes(all done by one guy... who also makes the entire games) rival that of top-banana composers.
Here are some examples of the songs; note that they've recieved a LOT of remix treatment there:

And here I thought I was one of the only ones that loved DKC music. I swear, the bonus room music got stuck in my head for 'hours' at a time. I can hear it now......Oh no!

The duke nukem guitar theme should've made it on this list, and i'm not just saying that because i'm a duke fan, i'm also a musician.

You forgot The moon level soundtrack from Ducktales, for the nes.

man, spectacular article. that silver surfer track blew me away, i cant believe that was NES. also, i have never played the original MGS but i can't believe how cinematic that was, especially for PS1, really impressive stuff.

I think Wipeout XL definitely deserves a place, it got me into techno-type music. Castlevania has the best music in any video game. Whatever happened to Yuzo Koshiro, he was so huge in the 16 Bit era. And nothing from Tommy Tallarico?

Aquatic Ambience and Terra's Theme back-to-back? Are you trying to kill my ears with joy, Brett?

10/10 for including UmJammer Lammy music!

It's a shame that DK devolved to that Kong-Rap or whatever it was called in DK64.

Also I'm going to start listening to Out Run in my car! Prime driving music!

First of all, an absolutely cracking article!

It was good to see FF6's theme in there, that games had music that provoked the rare (at the time) feeling that you weren't just playing a game, you were following an epic and well crafted story.

If I had to add anything to the list I'd have to say Thunder Force IV - those riffs were amazing -, FF7's One Winged Angel - an entire choir assembled for one last boss theme? Crazy! - and I always loved the Pyramid Head boss music at the end of SH2, horrifing and beautiful at the same time with such despairing, tragic air.

My favourite ones on this list are Castlevania III, Silver Surfer, and MGS. I actually don't like the Megaman soundtrack that much, but I really really like the Megaman 2 soundtrack. Dr Wily Stage 1 FTW.

I almost drowned in nostalgia when I heard Aquatic Ambiance.

What about Castlevania SOTN - Lost Paintings?!

That track orchestral-wise in the game ost world is light years ahead of its time. Well I think so anyway :D

Remember, it's not a list of every soundtrack ahead of it's time, just 17 examples of said tracks! =)

As my first post ever in this place, lemme just say I wholeheartedly agree with this entire article. I mean I'm a real fan of videogame music, BIG fan, it's the only thing I listen to all day even, and I didn't even realise about a few of these until now.

I love when you guys do articles on music, thanks for this one.

I'm reliving some classic C64 games and soundtracks, so this article couldn't have come at a better time. I remember One Man and His Droid being used during Ghostbuster's game-within-a-game, Invade-A-Load! It still sounds fantastic today, that was the power of the C64's SID chip, it was always ahead of its time.

Definitely yes for Metal Gear Solid's Encounter. Made boss battles unforgettable.
