is it just me or do al lthe people at GR hate 3-D?
It's not that 3-D has ruined games with the glitches like you list here (using halo 2 as an example is, lets face it, a little stupid. That was probably the most glitchy Bungie ever). Its just there are extra dimensions for it to go wrong with. For example, there isn't a 'right' or 'left' in a 2-D game!!!
escort missions are the apex of stupidity. Either the thing your supposed to be protecting says "Dont worry i'll be fine" , runs out into enemy gunfire and then becomes a bullet holder or he gets stuck behind a box and you have to save him from his own mental inadequecy OR he lags behind you and it takes hours for him to slowly plod back to the most recent checkpoint. NOBODY LIKES TO ESCORT OTHER PEOPLE!
I rather like 3D I think the GR editors just don't like it cus their a bunch of old men who liked gaming back in the old days when characters were square and the third dimension was something only heard about on an episode of The Twilight Zone.
I have to agree that swimming in vidgames is infact, lame. It asooks, except for in Ecco which was alot of fun but that's just not the same is it.
What about excess ladder climbing? no takers there?
i do hate escort missions as well, especially when the ai person is to stupid to hide in the room but runs all the way back to the starting point if not satisfied with the amount of protection offered. And although Ico is critically acclaimed... can we say giant escort mission of doom?
One last thing i hate that has improved 10x in the past couple of years but still isn't quite right? stormtrooper aim. Great for my enemies wrong for my allies to have.
well not all of these are bad, it just takes a good developer to perfect the innovation in such a beautiful way that it makes up for all the sucky games that tries and failed at it, like red faction for destructable environments
Geez, you missed "Checkpoint saves" or even worse, "x number of lives". So if you are NOT a expert thumb twicher, you get to REPEAT, REPEAT,REPEAT the level, level, level.
How about "unlockable stuff" that I will NEVER see as I cannot click a button fast enough to earn the game developer's respect.
In my opinion escort missions are absolutely the worst! After passing HAWX, with about 10 of those, which is a half of all missions that there are, I was so glad im done with it! Because you usually have to ether escort a hugeass plane, which should hae had at least SOME guns on it, well, it doesn't so you have to shoot enemies off while that plane is flying, in the same directon as before, and not even considering hiding somewhere or at least lowering lattitude, but the stupidest thing is when you have to help artilery, then you understand that AI was developed ONLY for enemies, while the guys you're helping are just dummies, shooting in one place, untill they alll die of course, which does happen alot since thaey have no brain...
I'd say that it's unanimous..everyone hates escort missions, myself included. Defence is horrible too, like in Gears at spots where you have to defend Jack while he opens doors..he's friggin invisible 95% of the time anyways! Why can't he just stay invisible while he opens the door?
In defense of "stealth"... you should have added a "do it right or don't do it at all" section like you did for destructible environments. Thief games were incredible (looking fwd to Thief 4), whereas "stealth" games like Splinter Cell befuddle me. Why use "stealth" when you have a danged machine gun?! Ugh...
Anywayz... yeah... stealth works right in the few examples of where they implemented it correctly.
One thing I really hate in games is poor writing when it comes to text. Found mostly where either the writer is doing a translation piece and he or she edits their own work, which ends up with some questionable language that doesn't make sense in any context, or even when the text is done in one's native language, except they use poor judgment or are trying to sound hip, which just turns out to be tragic.
Some of the things that bother me the most is using a "z" to end a word that really ends with an "S", replacing the word "you" with the letter "u", the constant use of the made up word "alot" in place of "a lot", and/or "noone" instead of "no one."
It's hard to take anybody seriously if their spelling and/or grammar looks like it was written by a retard. I see this everywhere in Internet forums, but when it creeps into games, it is totally unacceptable.
