10 things you need to know about the FFXIII trailer

We've been looking at it closely. Very closely

Words: Kim Richards, GamesRadar UK

First, some background. Final Fantasy XIII takes place in a rather feral world called Pulse. Long ago, a massive mystical crystal in control of the planet instructed a race of super human beings called the fal’Cie to construct a floating city called Cocoon. Now, the citizens of this perfect haven live the good life - albeit under the strict control of Cocoon’s elite military force, PSICOM. Enter leading lady Lightning, who’s been chosen by the fal’Cie to destroy Cocoon – mysterious, no?

The latest FFXIII trailer showcases Lightning’s first actions in her city-destroying mission. Hotter still, we get introduced to some new faces and even a sneak peek at that all-important combat system. Watch the trailer below and then fill up your FFXIII knowledge with our list of the 10 things featured in the promo movie that every Final Fantasy fan should know.

1 Vanille's story (00.21secs)

The Pig-Tailed Girl, who’s recently been named Vanille, is being exiled from Cocoon. Why? Because she’s been ‘influenced’ by the wilderness of Pulse. So, Cocoon’s Holy Government is literally tossing her, and other tainted individuals, back into the wild. It just so happens that their train is the one Lightning hijacks at the beginning of her epic quest.

2 What are those 'stripes' on Lightning's armour?  (00.28secs)

The rather surly, but definitely kick-ass Lightning has been chosen by the fal’Cie to bring down the false haven of Cocoon. Strangely, she used to be a soldier in Cocoon’s army (you can see the military stripes on her shoulder armour), which could explain her incredible skill in whup-ass.

3 Lightning can manipulate gravity (00:36)

Lightning has a gravity inducing chip on her thumb – so when she clicks her fingers, she can pull off insane gravity-defying moves. Such as shooting a bunch of soldiers in the face while standing on the ceiling.

4 Snow leads the resistance (00.44)

That big burly blonde chap is called, er, Snow. But despite his rather delicate name, he’s the leader of a resistance group who oppose Cocoon’s militaristic state. The orange haired man, scantily clad lady and collapsed be-goggled guy behind him are members of his troupe, although they’ve yet to be named.

5 Cocoon's military (1.01)

After hijacking the train, Lightning, Vanille and Snow are assaulted by PSICOM fighter planes. Cocoon’s military machines have actually been created by the world’s creator crystal. A mix of standard combat vehicles and giant mechanical monsters, FFXIII has a strong steampunk setting. Meanwhile, their fully helmeted soldiers and meaty guns bring an air of Killzone 2 to the scene…

Although there is nothing particularly wrong with it, the snippets of the story seem slightly reminiscent of the story to FFVII.

Or is it just me?

It doesn’t look that good anymore and turn based combat is a bit dull and outdated now. Even if it is fast.
I’m looking more forward to the next Star Ocean game on the 360 more than this. I will buy it though.
And I agree with Jbo87 it is very reminiscent of ff7. Probably to please fans and boost sales.
Shame about the PS3 loosing exclusivity to this, I find multi platform games never feel as special.

Well, of course it doesnt looks as good anymore, this was almost entirely in-game footage by the looks of it, and not a heap of FMV cutscenes weve seen in the other trailers.

Only thing I disagree on is 8. I think the bars in the bottom right are more likely to be the health bars of your own team, rather then the enemies health.

am i the only person who really does not care about the final fantasy games?
mattdark  - 9 months 27 days ago
No, your just the only one doesnt care who doesnt have the brain-power to IGNORE posts about things you dont care about...

Heh, this article is classic Kim...

I think Dr.Mr.Gamer has a good point, outside of Japan the ff series seems to have gone downhill in sales after ff7. This might be the game to turn things around for the series.
I care about ff enough to buy this, but i'm not very excited about it.
And when i said it doesn't look that good i was referring to the overall package such as character design, use of 'bullet time' and combat. Not just the graphics. My point is I have seen it all before.

mattdark - if you watch the trailer, and get to the bit that shows the gameplay, those healthbars on the bottom right go down in sync with the ones above the enemies heads. The kanji matches up too!

WHAAAAA!!! You mean this game will be good?
BodyDamage  - 9 months 27 days ago
it is going to be a long, LONG wait for this. i might die in the process.

CANNOT WAIT.

I agree with the whole remnicent of FFVII thing (I'm currently playing it for the first tim, it rocks PERIOD). Also although I'm pissed about the whole multi-platform thing I'm still glad to see the game coming together very nicely. Now if we could only see the battle system of FFXIII Versus, it should be worth the wait though.

CAN NOT WAIT MUCH LONGER FOR THIS GAME

Yet again, I cannot wait for FFXIII to come out.

To the guy who said this sounds like FFVII:

As I watched this trailer, I kept thinking "It's like they took little bits from all of the old games and put them here."

This Cocoon place looks like Zanarkand to me, and the steampunk thing sounds Midgar-ish. Not to mention the 'former government operative with crazy powers' schtick from FF7 and FF6.

Also, did anyone else notice the kickass retro-y music?

My only concern is this odd battle system. Can they make it work?

The only Final Fantasy game that I have played is Crisis Core and I have seen the FF7 movie. So I am really looking forward to this game.

amazing

Hyper-Techno style of this one. Reminiscent of Midgar in FF7, only much more advanced.
