Encore of the Night trailer is Puzzle Quest meets Castlevania

Why oh why is this only for iPhone?

About a month ago Konami revealed Castlevania Puzzle: Encore of the Night for the iPhone. As a lifelong Castlevania fan, I immediately thought "Christ, here we go," but after looking at the details and now watching this new trailer, there's a strong chance this may not be the casual cash-in we all took it for.

 

Essentially it's a mashup of classic Symphony of the Night sprites (and music, by the sound of it) with some of the experience-based nuances found in Puzzle Quest. Rather than a Bejeweled rip-off, however, it looks like Encore will play more like Capcom's Super Puzzle Fighter, which is itself a slight deviation of Columns, which, naturally, was a riff on Tetris. So this is basically Tetris. (No, it's not.)

If I had an iPhone, I would totally buy this. Alas, I do not, and therefor never will.

    Looks nothing like Puzzle Quest, it's more like Puzzle Fighter.

    I can't believe I got made with that title. Then you redeemed yourself by saying it's more of a Super Puzzle Fighter influence. Yeah would be good for XBLA, there are already a few puzzle games there lol.

    Wow that looks awful, that's all I can say. That's a half assed cash in if I've ever seen one. Make a game that doesn't require much work or thought, but tugs on the nostalgia drenched heart strings of SotN fans and ca-ching ca-ching. And yes that's Columns with Alucard standing there and numbers (a.k.a. RPG elements these days). Maybe they'll throw some Mountain Dew t-shirts for Alucard to wear and have him jump in hay! Konami knows how to make a buck.

    I'm surprised this one isn't on PSN, XBLA, or WiiWare. It could be a fun little toy.
