Emily VanCamp in line for female lead in Captain America 2

Captain America: The Winter Soldier looks as though it may have found its female lead, with Emily VanCamp currently in talks to join the project.

Best known for her work on TV show Revenge , VanCamp is thought to be likely to play Sharon Carter, a S.H.I.E.L.D. operative who is either the sister or niece of Peggy Carter, depending on which comic-book you’re reading.

Peggy herself will be unlikely to appear since Hayley Atwell has already confirmed she won’t be returning for the sequel, which leaves the road clear for Sharon to become Steve Rogers’ new love interest.

A string of high-profile actresses including Anna Kendrick, Alison Brie and Mary-Elizabeth Winstead had previously been linked to the role, but it looks as though VanCamp has beaten all of those to star opposite Chris Evans.

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and co-starring Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan, Captain America: The Winter Soldier will open in the UK on 4 April 2014.
