E3 2011: FFXIII-2 trailer reveals moogles, monster allies, new heroes and familiar haircuts

While the words “Final” and “Fantasy” have been atypically absent from many of the more high profile E3 press conferences, that doesn't mean Square Enix has taken a time-out from promoting its tentpole RPG series. Quite the opposite in fact: Final Fantasy XIII-2 has been playing front and center at the studio's booth ever since the big show began, and thanks to new media like this recently released E3 trailer, we now have a better idea of what changes are coming to the franchise's next numbered sequel.

Melodramatic dialogue? Unique monster designs? Rail-thin females clutching their chests in concern? The trailer hits all the standard notes for a Final Fantasy game, and then some. Highlights include the introduction of young Noel Kreiss, the return of Claire Farron (aka Lightning), hints of moogles, larger environments and monster summoning; all features which may bring disgruntled FFXIII players back into the fold.

The title is reported to take place in an alternate future, however it's futile to try and discern a FF plot this early in the game. Square Enix is offering a live demo of Final Fantasy XIII-2 at its booth, so expect more gameplay and story details to surface shortly.

So they said that Lightning died, but what happened to everyone else and why does Noel look a lot like Fang? These are just a few of the questions I have that I really want Square to explain.

@SDHoneymonster You have point there, but i sort of have a feeling The Purge being the exact same as FF13 quite boring. Therefore they changed it so it isn't as obvious what the cause is.

I really wish Square Enix would take a page from Rockstar's book and learn what good storytelling is. Red Dead Redemption and LA Noire had actual, fleshed out characters, and the plots were engrossing and fun to follow. This game just feels like another variation of the same crap Square Enix has been pumping out since they thought Infinite Undiscovery was a good idea. HIRE A FUCKING WRITER ALREADY -- or at least put more balls in the manatees' tank!

Firas - The Purge was an event in FF XIII where people were forcibly deported from Cocoon, although it was perpetrated because of a fear of contamination, so you're nearly right. I'm not going to go into Fal'Cies, L'Cies and the like, because it ill take far too long to explain...

Only saying what the most likely story is based on earlier FF games Based on the info in the trailer the story probably is about a magical diseease "The Purge" which makes the subject seem dead somehow, but actually goes to another dimension etc based on where Lightning was. Resulting in the comment Lightning is dead at the end.

I don't know how I feel about this trailer. But did anyone else hear the girl tell Serah at the end to get ahold of herself, that Lightning is dead?

@Spybreak8 How did FF13 fail "so hard"? It has a 83 on metacritic and sold over 5 million copies. This may not be a day 1 purchase for me but I'll definitely pick it up at some point.

How the hell can something that failed so hard like FFXIII get a spin off. Well I mean yeah that's what FF games do I guess but I still can't see it.

It looks pretty, what post-VII FF hasn't? But "alternate future?" ...Isn't that an oxymoron? I can understand "alternate reality", but this just seems like a thin stretch of XIII's already convoluted plot (not to mention flatout nonsensical and contradictory at times lol.) The new character design there's just no use griping about. Nomura has a passion for "beautiful" characters; there's no stopping him and his fangirl-fanbase. But like... wow... am I the only person that mistook him for Yuna in the screencap? So yeah we'll see what comes of it, but this lack of a familiar cast in favor of alteration leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.

"I want a future where everyone lives." Really? As opposed to what, dying seconds upon birth?
  • Clovin64 - June 8, 2011 10:28 p.m.

Also, no sign of Sazh yet? BOO!

I've been sucking up as much info on the internet as I could after I first saw this trailer. I'm glad that the battle system seems mostly unchanged since last time, 'cause I freakin' adored the FFXIII battle system... but the full system needs to be opened up much sooner than the 12-15 hour mark this time around. Looking forward to this one!

Not too gripped by this if I'm honest - FF XIII grew on me slowly but surely so I like the idea of a sequel, but I'm just not feeling it. Only the first trailer mind, so can't judge too much. Looks like NORA are involved, but I can't believe they'd feature NORA without Snow! Talking of that, apart from Lightning and Serah, there seems to be a lack of characters from the first game - I'd quite like to catch up with Sazh for example, he was the only one out of the main bunch I could stand! You've got to think that one or two will feature somehow.

I also was a fan of XIII, and am looking forward to this one. I am a little skeptical about the words "alternate future," but whatever. Let them do what they want, I will still buy it regardless.

I really wanna be excited for this, but i'm not sure yet. I was really hoping to hear more about Versus 13 too, oh well. @paganpoet I loved the battle system too.
  • polarp - June 8, 2011 9:17 p.m.

Has the FF series always been this melodramatic?
  • SvAcAde - June 8, 2011 9:06 p.m.

A Final Fantasy XIII-2 trailer sponsored by a Final Fantasy XIII-2 trailer... Sigh after all the E3 videos i cant even be bothered to wait 15 seconds to view it :(
  • EnigmaSpirit - June 8, 2011 8:43 p.m.

Looks very Kingdom Hearts flavored... I like. A less serious, more overall fun XIII-2 sounds awesome. I have only played the first 5 hours of XIII, but I loved it for the story. A more light hearted and fun game seems like a good follow-up.
  • IcePotato - June 8, 2011 8:33 p.m.

Can't wait for more hallways and terrible battle system.
  • MyNameIsMyName - June 8, 2011 8:33 p.m.

Really an alternate future? Couldn't it just be a direct sequel. They must just stay slapping their collective knees at how absurd they can make their stories. Even by Square standards that Noelle guy was unnecessarily androgynous. What are the odds Lighting will show up late in the game wearing a robe and a bird mask while being controlled by Wesker. Didn't see Snow anywhere in that trailer.
