E3 2005: Five years later

Before E3 2010 even begins, let's take a look at the show from five years earlier

3RD PARTIES AT E3 2005

Activision was no less ominous five years ago. That dangling logo is the size of a bus, leering over the whole show floor like the eye of Sauron. Featured games were Call of Duty 2, Hulk: Ultimate Destruction and some Tony Hawk game I can't recall. Probably American Wasteland. Sure, why not.

Speaking of CoD2, here's its base of operations. If only they loaded up that cannon with shirts.

Electronic Arts premiered its gargantuan 360 degree screen, complete with floor-sized speakers underneath. Really was something else, and used again in 2006.

Square-Enix came correct with a large assortment of Dragon Quest slimes, though none were for sale. Believe me, I asked.

Konami was pleased to show off its first DS Castlevania, Dawn of Sorrow, which we loved to death.

Atari put a lot of effort in its Path of Neo booth and play area. Nothing distracting about all that scrolling code, no sir!

And who could forget Rude Games, the life of any party past, present and future? Oh, the hilarity!

OBLIGATORY BABES

Oh hey, it's the Frag Dolls. What're they doing here?

Ah, they're playing America's Army. My, that looks entertaining.

Two well-paid women muster up enthusiasm for True Crime: New York City.

Namco brought its big ol' stage from E3 2004 back onto the floor, complete with yellin' ladies who love to throw shirts at people.

Saints Row, as represented by two extremely interested booth babes. And some guy.

Auto Assault had an entire group of stage performances going on throughout the week, be they fire eaters, jugglers or exotic dancers. A glamorous show ruined by sad reality: one day after the show, I was walking to my hotel and saw all of these performers hanging out on a corner, in-costume and seemingly crushed by life.

And what would an E3 be without some manner of bunny or cat girls? Pretty sure they were repping Final Fantasy XI, but it could have been a bit of XII as well.

Final page: Cosplayers and general crap that defied categorization

This was nice to see. I'd enjoy any other pictures you have of E3 either earlier or later than this one. Haha, Sessler looks pissed.

Great article with memorable pictures and funny comments Brett. It is crazy seeing the PlayStation batarang controller and the Game Boy Micro again. I completely forgot about those two. The part about the CoD2 cannon shooting t-shirts and the performers from Auto Assault looking crushed from life in a bar afterwards made me laugh. I've also never been more creeped out by Sessler than in that picture (and that is saying something).

It's like Sessler is piercing into my SOUL!!!!! O_O

wow , I completely forgot about that ugly boomerang controller D:
  • Wolverine08 - June 12, 2010 7:10 p.m.

Sony could market that batarang controller now as a PS3 self defence gadget. someone really annoying sat next to you on a match of CoD? Just lob the sonyrang at them, and all they'll dream of is squares and triangles. What is up with Sessler? It's like he's frozen everyone around him and is now COMING FOR YOU! 0:

cool! even though it looks like they were throwing large scale displays and booth babes (that look like they are almost 40) at the attendees... i would really love to experience an E3 in person. seems like fun. should have gone maybe when it was here in atlanta. ah well. gawd, that ps3 controller looks like something you would find in a blurry photo on a mufon site or something. thanks for sharing brett

Fun read. I love the description of the Activision logo as "the eye of Sauron". Was that E3 as boring that year as it looks now? Oh and I want that NES controller.

I still don't get why you keep saying TP takes 50+ hours to beat, I never take over 20.

    Hahahha the Sess evil eye.

what do you mean everybody ditched the sixaxis? everybody except me and all the other people who bought there ps3 before the dualshock 3 came out and who didn't want to drop $55 on a heavier controller just for rumble. I'm using my sixaxis right now thank you very much.

    Great read!
  • Cyberninja - June 12, 2010 8:51 p.m.

that was back before causal gaming.
  • GamesRadarBrettElston - June 12, 2010 9:33 p.m.

@sleepy I meant developers, not us saps who bought the system early. Sony touted SIXAXIS motion controls left and right for about a year and a half, then dropped it. Really makes me think Move has a long life ahead of it!

Gumby is fucking awesome. The last photo is hilarious. Jesus, how the years have flown by...

  • ArthurHucksake - June 12, 2010 9:53 p.m.

My life's ambition is to creampie a FragDoll, they could use the aftermath for adverts in a new Sims game or something. I know you dont really like games, we can just go shopping.
  • tayls - June 12, 2010 10:24 p.m.

God, this is yet another reminder of what a joke that PS3 design was. So freaking rushed. I can see it: "Well, we have the rights to THIS custom font...should we just use this? Also, make a controller that wouldn't work for anything besides pleasuring siamese sisters! Then rush it to E3!!!" Ugh...thank you for the laughs, though.
