The good guys are really good, the bad guys are really bad, and the princesses are really doe-eyed. But sometimes, games manage to work in villains that operate in shades of gray… and other times, they accidentally make a villain out of the most sympathetic guy in the story. ...

Makes sense then to give Nintendo’s “serious” hero/villain duo a hard time too, eh? Witness pointy-eared Link change from squat child to lean teen, and the villainous Ganon transform from monster to human and back again. ...

First, the Balance Wii Board, the peripheral that's included with Wii Fit. The magazine noted that Wii Fit has been quite the success story for Nintendo so far. To this, Miyamoto responded that if the game sees success overseas as well, Nintendo may end up releasing separate titles that make use of the peripheral.

The magazine also asked Miyamoto the inevitable question about sequels, and he gave the expected answer. In case you have to hear to to believe it, Miyamoto is indeed interested in making a Super Mario Galaxy sequel. He's also thinking about the next Zelda title.
Using data from the holiday 2007 shopping season, the firm said that one factor in the industry's growth has been a larger-than-expected next-generation adoption rate among casual gamers.

"Our first-ever Game of the Year awards was a pretty straight forward deal. I asked all of the writers to submit a list of three games for each category and the three that showed up most in each category made it as a finalist. Once we had the list of finalists I asked each writer to go through and order the finalists and then tallied the vote. The one with the most points was named Game of the Year, the runner-up was named Not Quite Game of the Year. The game with the most votes for Worst Game of the Year received that dubious honor."

Super Mario Galaxy won Kotaku's Overall Game of the Year award. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune came as second, it won the Not Quite Game of the Year award. (Kotaku posted the overall results as a separate post, see the link at the Alternative Sources below for more details.)

As the last of 2007 creeps away, Japanese gaming mag Weekly Famitsu asked 280 users and 63 stores to sum up the game industry this year, publishing the first part of the questionnaire's results in this week's issue.

This week's top five all-platform requests show little movement once again, after last week saw the list barely ruffled. Assassin's Creed still takes the top spot for a third week with Mass Effect in second for its second week in a row.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which spent the last two weeks at number four, slips a bit to the fourth spot to make room for Kane and Lynch: Dead Men to move up one spot into the fourth spot, but that's the only movement -- Uncharted: Drake's Fortune stays at number five, where it entered last week.

"Now before you get all excited, let me tell you one thing. Don't get too excited. This "website" is really only a teaser page and in all likelihood, has nothing to do with Nintendo. A quick whois lookup reveals that the domain was registered through GoDaddy and seeing as Nintendo generally registers their domains through Network Solutions, the probability of this being an actual licensed project is slim to none. More probable is that this is some fan project that may or may not ever come to fruition. Anyone care to make further speculations?"

The annual pre-"Black Friday" bargain hunting has started among predatory shoppers, and sears already reaping the benefits of shoppers' insane vigilance. This detail from a Sears ad has revealed two new DS hardware configurations. DS Fanboy already knew of the gold Phantom Hourglass box, but this is the firmest confirmation we've seen from an actual retailer.

More interesting is the reveal of a metallic pink Nintendogs: Best Friends Edition bundle for $149.99. DS Fanboy does not know if this is a Sears exclusive, but the little ad clipping makes no mention of exclusivity. We doubt it, since one of the intrepid commenters hinted at exactly this hardware for GameStop as well. A new hardware bundle for a two-year-old game? Seems ludicrous on the outset, but it'll probably sell a (few million) bundle(s).

Tens of thousands of gamers voted for the true people's awards, held Friday in London, which highlighted the elite titles from the past year across a diverse range of categories.

Undoubtedly the big winner at this year's awards was Microsoft and Epic's stellar third-person shooter Gears of War, which took four top honors. Gears triumphed in the Ultimate Game of the Year, Xbox Game of the Year, The Nuts All-Nighter and the Editor's Choice categories. It also placed third in the 1Xtra Soundtrack of the Year and The GameTribe Online Game of the Year categories.

Codemasters received the UK Developer of the Year award for 2007 sponsored by Next-Gen.biz, while Game took the prizes for Retailer of the Year. Nintendo took the Publisher of the Year award ahead of Microsoft Game Studios and Codemasters, while the Wii was labeled Innovation of the Year.
Phantom Hourglass is a little easier than most of the other Zelda titles, but that doesn't mean it's a total cakewalk. To lend a helping hand, we've constructed this fast-pass guide. Seeing as you're savvy enough to be on GamesRadar, playing Zelda and looking up help, we're going to assume you've played a little Zelda in your day. Therefore, we're not going to bore you with every last detail. If the route is simple, we'll say "advance" or "move on." If there's a puzzle the ...

VGChartz has just uploaded the new hard- and software sales for the week of September 30 - October 6. Not suprisingly, Halo 3 remains the top selling game in the US with an additional 562.000 copies in its second week, which brings its total to almost 3.2 million. Nintendo DS's biggest title of the year thus far, The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, debuted on second place with almost 350.000 copies. Also, NBA 2K8 on the Xbox 360 outsold NBA Live 08 on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 2 with a debut of 116.000, compared to NBA Live's 102.000 on the Xbox 360. Microsofts exclusive title Project Gotham Racing 4 debuted with just 90.000 copies in its first week.

On the hardware side, the Halo 3 effect seems to still effect the Xbox 360 hardware sales as Xbox 360 hardware numbers jumped another 6% to almost 130.000. Nintendo DS was still the top selling hardware this week, despite a 5% decline to 135.000 copies. Nintendo Wii sales dropped 2% to 95.000 as Playstation 3 numbers remained at the same level with almost 30.000 units. Check out all this weeks numbers after the jump.
We've obviously been counting the seconds until Phantom Hourglass hit store shelves, and now we can finally spend a solid weekend navigating Link through perilous dungeons. Phantom Hourglass is a little easier than most of the other games, but that doesn't mean it's a total cakewalk either. To lend a helping hand, we've constructed this fast-pass guide to the first three dungeons, with a particular emphasis on the bosses. Let's go!

In some peoples Zelda codec, boat = monotony. Wind Wakers Triforce trawl and irksome wind realignment did for many of you, leaving jaded gamers in its wake. Well, get over it. Although a canonical continuation of Wind Waker, this is a custom-built DS outing, determined to deliver more than a control-scheme makeover. From the moment Link plunges his hand into a chest and pulls out… nothing at all to an off-key discovery jingle, you know youre in for something quite ...
Nintendo currently owns four of the top 10 best-selling franchises in the video game world. Number one? Of course it's Mario, the bouncy platform king everyone knows. Nipping at his heels are 493 super-powered Pokemon. Charging right behind them, however, is one lone figure riding atop his tireless steed, sword held high in utter triumph and hard-nosed defiance against all other comers.

So, even though Mario and Pokemon outrank Link by a wide margin, the latter's mindshare and ...

The newest issue of the British magazine EDGE is in stores as of today and its always interesting to see which games were reviewed and what scores they got. This month some interesting titles have been reviewed, such as: Blue Dragon, Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Transformers and GRAW2 for the PS3.

Apparently EDGE didn't really like Transformers and Hour of Victory as both games got 2/10 from EDGE. The British don't really like Blue Dragon and Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 as well as both games 'only' got 6/10. Zelda: Phantom Hourglass did really well as it scored 9/10. Check out all of this months reviewscores below.
Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (NDS, Nintendo): 9
Blue Dragon (Xbox 360, Microsoft): 6

The votes have been tallied and the Best of E3 2007 Winners have been announced.

Rock Band with 3 seperate votes took first...just barely ahead of Mass Effect who placed second with 2 votes. However, the surprise comes with the games that took the rest of the places:

Bioshock
Burnout Paradise
Call of Duty 4
Crysis
Halo 3
Killzone 2
LittleBigPlanet
Madden NFL 08
The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Virtua Fighter 5
World in Conflict

Gamecriticsawards.com even broke down the tally further and the console with the most wins was...Xbox 360 (acquiring 11 wins), followed in second by the Playstation 3 (aquiring 8 votes). Third place was the PC (with 4 votes), and tied for fourth was both the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS. Oddly enough, the PSP was last...not even getting one game on the list this year!

Eiji Aonuma, the new leader of Nintendo's Zelda endeavours, spoke with Game|Life at the E3 Media & Business Summit last week, and discussed Link's latest adventure, The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass.

Nintendo unveiled the game early last year, but development has been taking place ever since the Nintendo DS hardware was first finalised within the company. Aonuma explained that the long development process was due to the team finding "that in order to create a real, quality, stylus-controlled Zelda game, we needed to tweak and tweak and tweak.
After a year of delays, Link's first DS adventure finally has a release date - The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass is coming stateside on October 1. Great, just in time for the holiday "great game every five minutes" rush.

Already out in Japan, Phantom's mysteries are slowly being unraveled by gamers instead of press releases, but that's not stopping Nintendo from summing up the plot in one bite-sized paragraph:

"The game involves legendary hero Link and Tetra, the leader of a band of ...

Possibly the most anticipated DS game this year will be heading to America on October 1st 2007. Unlike normal Zelda games, the DS iteration of the classic is entirely touched controlled and it plays surprisingly well. The game contains the same art style in 3D that the GameCube version Wind Waker had and even has Wifi Connection multiplayer.

Nintendos' George Harrison says that "The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass stays true to the richness of the console Zelda franchise while introducing new controls that allow veterans and first-time gamers to become fully immersed in the adventure."
In the first trailer trailer, the main focus is on how to command link to attack enemies. Link can attack not only forward, but his signature spin attack is easily performed with a simple circular motion.
Phantom Hourglass is looking better every time Nintendo hits us with a new batch of screens, and this latest load is no exception.

Check out the detail in the house interior screen, or the way the sand kicks up in the dungeon and the water splashing off Link's boat out at sea. We've seen flatter water in PS2 games, and it's the sort of tech that you'd assume impossible on ...
The Legend of Zelda: The Phantom Hourglass will make extensive use of the DS touch-screen, with Link performing three different sword attacks depending on how you swish your stylus. He'll also leap or run to distant areas you poke at, while walking toward closer places you touch.

These morsels of control info come from Japanese gaming mag Nintendo Dream.

Our recent previewof the game hints at other controls (like nautical combat) however the only release we have so far is the Japanese street ...
Phantom Hourglass is the sequel to the excellent Wind Waker on GameCube, an adventure that saw Link reincarnated as a lad in a flooded future world where only the highest bits of land remained ...
And while theres no denying that this is certainly the best Link has ever looked, hes come along way since he first graced our consoles way back in 1986.

Of course it comes as no surprise that Link has taken on a wealth of different looks over his years of adventuring and exploring. He began his adventures as a tiny sprite in The Legend ...
The hourglass named in the title of Link's highly-anticipated DS quest will come into play by keeping you alive in a cursed dungeon that constantly drains your health.

So what can fans expect from the Phantom Hourglass? The ability to play as Ganondorf in wi-fi multiplayer battles? Or maybe Link will get some new weapons, like a sawn off shot gun or a chainsaw? These sorts of rumours are hard to swallow, mostly because we just made them up. Some speculation however seems unwilling to die, no matter how vigorously it's beaten back with the fact stick.

IGN reports that April is looking as big as can be for the DS over in Japan, with Final Fantasy XII Revenant Wings closing off the month. So how's Nintendo going to top this big Square Enix blockbuster in the months that follow?

The release chart in the latest issue of Famitsu provides the answer. The magazine reveals that Nintendo Japan will be publishing Ouendan 2, the sequel to the Japanese inspiration for our Elite Beat Agents, on 5/17. And if that's not big enough for you, Zelda: Phantom Hourglass will hit Japanese retail a month later, on 6/23!
Instead, Eiji Aonuma and his portable Zelda team have come up with a fun little one-on-one battle game which has a red and blue Link fighting over scattered triforce pieces in a Pac-Man style maze.

You're tasked ...
Remember last year when Nintendo premiered its new DS Zelda game, Phantom Hourglass at GDC? It's been a full 12 months and we still haven't seen squat. A brief, multiplayer E3 2006 appearance and a handful of screens are all we've been allowed to witness - but today that path changes. Below is the re-issued trailer for Link's next cel-shaded adventure, plus the Images tab above holds several new screens for your viewing enjoyment.

The demo pits two players against each other in a Pac-Man-style battle mode, with one player controlling Link and the other guiding three enemies around the map using stylus-drawn directions.

The player controlling Link is tasked with collecting as many Tri-Force pieces littered around the stage as possible, though the larger the pieces you pick up the slower you will be able t move. Once the baddie player successfully captures our green-hatted hero roles will swap and the game goes on.
The touch-screen adventure would be a continuation of The Wind Waker's cutesy, animated style and ship in the fourth quarter of this year. Nintendo's own press site still claims this is the case.

However, searching for the game on pretty much any retailer's website shows a 2007 release is in the cards. EB Games claims March, Best Buy says January 31... no one knows. It makes sense, however, to not spit ...
We've unearthed some new shots of The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (check out the Images tab for more), which will continue the story and cartoon visual style of 2003's Wind Waker when it is released for DS next year.

It's still Zelda as you know it - townsfolk to talk to, grass to cut, dungeons to explore - but using the DS stylus for all actions, issuing directions for Link rather than direct control. Hungry for more? Hit up our earlier ...
Wednesday 26 July 2006
Nintendo has recently released its 2006 DS line-up for the US and, while it is an undeniably exciting list, there is one game that's conspicuously absent - The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass.

Phantom Hourglass was playable at this year's E3 and was down for a winter 2006 release ...
Were you one of those people that really had to struggle with the Saturday morning graphics of 2003's Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker? Well, get over it, because the 'toon style is back and this time you're only going to be using the DS' stylus to save the day.

Phantom Hourglass seemingly ignores every button on the handheld, forcing you to guide Link through Hyrule by pointing and sliding the stylus across the touch screen. A fairy accompanies the pointy-eared hero, ...
• The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (WMV, 4.78MB) - right-click to download

Friday 12 May 2006
Nintendo has released a video and screenshots of Link's debut on DS in The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass.

The game is set months after the events of GameCube's WindWaker when Link and Tetra have set sail to explore new lands. Unfortunately when searching an abandoned ship, the two explorers are separated, with Link being washed up on the shore of a mysterious island. From here he must ...
We can't wait

Metroid Prime 3
There's so little known about any and every Wii title that we could easily just slap the entire console down as our most sought-after E3 experience. But if its games were laid bare for all to see, Metroid Prime 3 is where you'd find us.

So far, all anyone's seen of Samus' latest bounty hunt is a brief trailer, where she... exits her ship on a desolate planet. Whee. But we don't really care which creature she's tracking down or what poison-spewing aliens are on ...
Nintendo has delighted DS gamers by announcing that a new Zelda game - The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass - will be appearing on the portable pocket filler later this year, and you can see the first trailer for it right now by clicking the movies tab at the top of this very page.

The latest addition to the Zelda family was unveiled at the Game Developers Conference in California and, despite Nintendo not offering attendees much information regarding the game, the trailer certainly gives ...
Most of us expected to see a brief Revolution trailer or two at the Game Developers Conference today. Well, there was no such thing. What we got instead is a brand new Zelda adventure for DS. In fact, it's well into development and aimed to come home this fall.
