The Pokemon series is surprisingly full of creepy stuff, from its morbid Pokemon designs to its eerily discordant Lavender Town theme. Pokemon's disturbing side is well-represented by its Ghost-types, with dolls possessed by pure hatred, ghosts posing as balloons to drag children to the underworld, and plenty of Pokemon that will steal your soul if you look at them the wrong way...

Most of us play games to escape reality. For a few moments, the trials of the material world trickle away and your only concern is how many goddamn gold coins you can collect in an hour. Then, out of nowhere, a friggin' Xbox 360 console shows up in the actual game and all your suspended disbelief goes right out the window. It happens more often than you'd think. So often, in fact, we had little trouble amassing a large collection of these sneaky cameos. Here are the best examples, from zombie-blasting Dreamcasts to a DS floating in space.

It’s been 15 years since Pokemon took Japan’s islands by storm, and since then the numerous species of portable critters have become beloved across the globe. The franchise has become a monster of its own, laden with various product tie-ins and spin-offs. While we’re certainly all aware of the main Pokemon titles – and more likely than not, spin-offs like Pokemon Ranger, Pokemon Stadium, and the not-very-beloved Mystery Dungeon titles that somehow keep getting released – there have been a lot of Pokemon games that simply haven’t made much of a blip on players’ radars...

The Pokemon series is full of creepy allusions if you look hard enough, but by far the creepiest place in all the Pokemon kingdom is Lavender Town and its depressing Pokemon Tower in the Kanto region of Pokemon Red and Blue. Meant to showcase Ghost-type Pokemon, Lavender Town reeks of death. As you ascend the seven-story mausoleum of the Pokemon Tower, you see nothing but grave after grave and trainers wailing in anguish at the loss of their beloved Pokemon friends. It's also the homeplace of Cubone, the most heart-wrenching Pokemon of all time, who wears his dead mother's skull as a mask to hide his own face.

Lavender Town's story goes beyond the in-game creepiness though, and the eerie audio track itself sparked an intense urban legend. The story goes that the properties of the Lavender Town theme audio, particularly some of the high pitched tones, caused mental disturbances specifically in children...

What's the deal with Poliwrath? Seriously, a tadpole Pokemon that remains a tadpole even after its third-stage evolution? Really?! Did it really not occur to anyone on the Pokemon design team that tadpoles turn into frogs until Gold and Silver?

We ponder this and more on today's episode - download link inside!
